I have a 2011 honda pilot awd with a rod knock. The vin engine code is 4. I can find reasonably priced fwd engines with the code 2 but awd engines are much more expensive. Is there an actual difference between a awd and fwd engine? Also, would a 3.5 from an accord fit? I'd rather not fix the rod knock as it is a result of the engine being run low on oil. It went through 4 qts of oil in the 2k miles between me checking it and the oil light coming on so I don't know what other damage was done.

Yes, there is a difference. Must be an exact match. I don’t find any other Honda engine that will cross over for the 2011 AWD Pilot.

That is absolutely incorrect there are a couple people on this forum that have swapped engines from a cheaper source, one member moscowmatt and I can't remember the other name but I will find it. I remember he did a fwd to awd swap or vise versa. It can be done.

We are talking compatibility.
Only 2009-2011 AWD Pilot engines are compatible for an easy swap. All else falls under making modifications.

Hi guys just wanted to give an update, I just finished my engine swap, so going with what the previous poster said, I did use my old intake manifold, however the two did look the same, but I switched just to be sure. Aside from that I found no difference between using an engine coming from an AWD and using it on a FWD transmission and wire harness. Started up with no problems and no check engine lights.
This is a post from alzeal, you can search to find it but he successfully did a swap without any issues. Don't listen to people on this board that are just completely adamant that other methods outside the exact honda way won't work.

I don’t have a problem being corrected. This example is from a AWD to a 2wd. Will it work the other way?
