Page 8 of the PDI states:

"Because of the 4-wheel drive system, the Pilot must be towed on a flat-bed truck or trailer. Towing with two wheels on the ground will damage the 4WD system."

If the rear clutches are disengaged and the engine is off, how can this damage the 4WD system?

The next section "Towing Behind a Motorhome" is kinda funny too.

Be happy

I would always rather have a car flat bed towed.
The owners manual instructions give you the perfect excuse to turn down one of those sling, or wheel tows.

But you do ask a good question.
I will have to flip through the service manual to see if anything is obvious.

Anyone know the REAL answer?

Wasn't it the PDI that also talked about running the engine before towing it on all 4s behind an RV. Something about stopping every 8 hours to run the engine to lubricate things.

I don't know why Honda says not to tow on the rear wheels only but I can think of a possible reason. It could be an oil pump or slinger is run off the driveshaft which is turning when the vehicle is moving, whether or not it has enabled rear wheel drive. If towed on the rear wheels only, the driveshaft might not be turning, hence no lubrication. Just a theory and could be completely wrong. Guess I'll order the service manual soon, lots to learn.

Maybe someone with a service manual can check this out-

http://patimg1.uspto.gov/.piw?docid=US005839328&PageNum=1&&IDKey=A2A1C697EF96&HomeUrl=http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2%26Sect2=HITOFF%26p=1%26u=/netahtml/search-bool.html%26r=50%26f=G%26l=50%26co1=AND%26d=ft00%26s1='borg-warner%252Bautomotive'%2526s2=torque%2526OS=%252522borg-warner%252Bautomotive%252522%252BAND%252Btorque%2526RS=%252522borg-warner%252Bautomotive%252522%252BAND%252Btorque

It is a Borg-Warner patent that sure sounds like what the Pilot uses in the rear diff. If so, column 5 on page 8 of the text explains the oil scoopers run off the driveshaft, hence my theory above of why you can't tow on just the back wheels.

Added in later edit--
It appears something has timed out in the patent office on the link above, worked yesterday but not today, so if you want to view it go to-
http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/search-adv.htm
And do a number search using patent number 5839328.
At the bottom there is an "images" button to get to the diagrams and description.
