I have a 2017 Pilot EX-L with RES. I have an iPhone that I keep in the car all the time connected as CarPlay. The phone # on that phone is NOT either of our regular #s. That works well. Up to now.

However, our state has passed a new law that requires hands free operation.

While hands-free works fine on the dedicated iPhone it doesn't receive the iMessages and phone calls sent to our regular #s.

My goal would be to have our regular iPhones connect to the hands-free facility of the Pilot via Bluetooth and supplant the CarPlay's iPhone's telephone and text interface using the non-CarPlay capability build into the Pilot. I would want to continue using the CarPlay capabilities of maps (Google Maps) and audio (radio.com).

Using our regular iPhones for CarPlay has been problematic as having them hardwired to the car tends to cause us to leave them in the car when we exit the car.

I apologize if this is confusing. It is confusing to me as well.

Perhaps someone can explain a simple solution to me.

Once you connect to CarPlay, other devices disconnect automatically. I don’t think there is a workaround for that. Just try to remember not to leave your phone in the car.
