Has anyone converted the cargo area socket to have power at all times? I'm considering using a low-wattage 12v electric cooler to replace an ice cooler for camping.

Just a though here, but you might be better served with a second deep cycle battery in a case with a charger. Nothing more fun than packing everything up, loading the vehicle and nothing from a depleted battery. You could charge it on the go from the socket power and not worry about depleting your vehicle battery.

Converting a 12V port to constant power is not a big deal but running ANY electric cooler with the engine OFF will make for a bad day/night. Check out some overlander build threads that design systems that include deep cycle batteries with integrated charge systems, low-voltage cut-off/warning, etc.

Do that.

Or spend less money, do less engineering, grit your teeth and spring for a high-end cooler. With good "cooler discipline", blanket wraps, and some shade, you can keep things cold enough for 4 or 5 days.

If that's not good enough, build a solar system dedicated to the refrigerator, or consider LP.

Thank you, the link didn't work, but I found the PowerPak 3

That was the link. They must have updated their site.

It's not a cheep option, but it would have it's advantages. They advise in the owners manual that it ran a 40L Waeco fridge up to 6 days. With the solar charger you could probably keep it going for many days longer if needed. Plus if you should have an issue with the vehicle battery you would have a batter to jump from as well.
