I finally sat in the Honda Pilot and was most interested about the middle seat on the 2nd row that everyone seems to be complaining about. And yes, that middle seat is a back killer. I would not want to be in that middle seat for a long period of time. It almost seems that Honda designed the Pilot to seat 2 in the 2nd row, not 3 since they made it very uncomfortable. I wonder if there is anyway to alleviate this without using a back cushion of some sort.

Any ideas? Is this a deal breaker for most people?

I also tried the Acura MDX and the middle seat (which has a pop-out armrest) is also uncomfortable but not as uncomfortable as the Pilots.

My wife had the exact same reaction when she tried the middle seat in the 2nd row. But my explanation to her was, most other vehicles have the same issue and it is because of the arm-rest, activity-tray or whatever else other manufacturers are calling it.

We have the SS Pilot now and am not sure how often we will be using the middle seat for adults, since we have a car-seat that we plan on placing in the middle seat.

Re: Re: Back Killer - Middle Seat on 2nd Row, any way to make this more comfortable?

For what it is worth, we currently have the car seat anchored in this spot for the demon seed. I would suggest that this seat back firmness actually adds to a safe environment for the time being (a bit less overall seat movement).

Admittedly, Pilot-smitten :10: , I am

I ride in a 01 MDX almost every day in the middle seats and find them very comfortable. I will admit though, that after sitting an a Pilot, the arm rest/activity tray-a-ma-bob is pretty much worthless and in the way. Folding it up made sitting in the Pilot much better.

sorry to add to an old thread, but yes, I tried the middle row seat, and was surprised that it was that hard.. Honda should have added a little more padding to the backing.. I shake my head sometimes on how easy it would have been to correct the little things...

ohh well, I LOVE MY PILOT ANYWAY!

I can't find it right now, but xyzzy (I think) took apart the middle row center seat and showed pictures of the steel(?) insert that makes it so stiff. Several ideas for softening up the seat were discussed in that thread.

Personally I consider the Pilot comfortable seating for FOUR adults, short-trip seating for eight persons, some of them hopefully small.
But that suits us fine.

The "activity tray" is great for separating warring factions in the back seat, holding food and drink (yes we are past the honeymoon period in the Pilot now) and holding the GameCube to play on the RES on long trips.

P.S. The LX doesn't have the activity tray so has a more comfortable center seat.

LX Middle Seat

My wife rode for a couple hours in the middle 2nd row seat of our LX between the kids in car seats. She was perfectly comfortable for the first hour and a half, but then was wishing for more padding. No issues with width, even between a baby seat and a booster seat (although she's pretty skinny).

I guess I never worry about since I am riding in the front. It is very seldom anybody older then 10 will sit in the middle. Now that I think of it, my daughter sits in the middle all the time, but only to get a straight view of the screen. She hasn't said anything, but then again, she is dead to anything but the movie in her face!
