Every one of the links I posted is a Honda Dealer with the part on hand. They are dealers that do stock the extra parts for online sales at a discount price. When I wanted one for my 2020 Passport Touring, same part number, my dealer didn't have one. Bernardi did at a discount. They had it transferred from Bernardi to them and I paid the Bernardi price for the part and they installed it.

Do I understand correct.......there's no simple place to "tap in"/attach an aftermarket tranny cooler on the 9 speed?
Yes there the transmission has to sealed ports where the lines attach. It is still a process to run everything as well as fill the transmission properly. There is no dipstick. This is a run the tranny in a particular manner, heat the fluid to a tight temp range fill process.

Thanks for your input. I understand covid affected the supply chain. I ordered the Honda cooler from one of the suggested dealers. Thanks very much. Also thanks for temperature info. This forum has been great!

I had been told after market coolers like e trailer would void my warranty. 4 dealer parts departments, 3 in NC and 1 in FL told me part not available. I reported the issue to Honda customer service who said they couldn't help, but would write up the problem. Thanks for clearing up this matter.
No an after market cooler should not void you warranty, if it is of the right size and properly installed. Just like a Delco starter would not void your warranty. After market parts will not void you warranty as long as they meet manufacturers specifications and are properly installed. Aftermarket accessories however can be a different story.

Today we picked up the trailer. Estimate 2700lbs. Will get it weighed. Pilot 9 speed did well. Left it in D. It did downshift to climb grades and RPMs ran 3000-4000, speed around 40-50mph. Transmission fluid temp ran up to 206F at steepest part of grade. MPG 12.5.

About warranty - I've been told by Honda service reps that anything other than genuine Honda ATF cooler made for my vehicle will void warranty. Cost of new transmission $3-4k. But thanks to posts here, I was able to order one and it shipped today.
You might want to ask the about the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. I would suggest that Honda does not state what your dealer is telling you.

With that said I did go with the OEM on my 2020 Passport Touring. Got it for a good price and this was one part I was not going to install.

FYI when you are pushing past the 200 F range going up hill your vehicle is telling you that you should have gone down a couple of gears.

Wonder how the etrailer.com cooler actually connects to the 9 speed tranny? etrailer.com says "excluding the 9 speed".

Thats because in 2018 you could have a 6 speed or a 9 speed transmission. It also says right up front: "Designed for vehicles with 6 Speed Transmission"

I see the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act cited regularly, but the reality is that the burden is still on the consumer. Dealers and Honda don't mind denying a warranty because they know that 99.999% of owners will never actually sue them. Even if you're right and Honda is wrong, their legal team will embarrass you and your attorney in a trial. No sane attorney would ever take on a warranty denial case. :)
One problem is that people don't actually read and understand the act. The act only covers parts original to the design of the vehicle If Honda designed and or included it as part of a vehicle then the act applies.

Modifications are not parts. Honda didn't design a VCM killer. If your vcm killer causes an issue that is not a part covered. If you lift kit fails and ruins a rack, Honda doesn't make a lift kit and again the warranty does not come into play.

The act also doesn't cover improper or incomplete work. It also doesn't mean that Honda has any responsibility for replacing the non OEM/aftermarket part.

What it does mean is that if you starter goes out and you replace it with a Delco and two months later you alternator goes bad. If you vehicle is under warranty then Honda can't deny your warranty claim on the alternator because you used a Delco starter, unless they can prove that the starter caused the alternator to fail.

What blows my mind is that it still has a 6,000 lb. towing limit even with the CVT that the 9-speed is replacing. ;)
There are various models of the ZF 9 transmission. Some that are lighter duty, lesser torque rating than the one Honda uses, some that are heavier duty, higher torque rating than Honda uses.

It's kind of like Bush's beans, they have regular baked beans and several other different flavors of baked beans.

Tomorrow we'll get to see ATF temp pulling 9 degree grade in Blue Ridge mountains. Ambient temp around 70.

RV dealer insisted on load balancing hitch with sway control even though tongue at is 370lb - 450 is max. Honda owners manuel recommended against but wording seemed to concern improperly configured hitch. We will get actual wt and measure tow and trailer to get each level after hitch adjustments.

Thanks again for input.
Is the dealer going to come out and readjust the WDH every time you hook up the trailer? Did they teach you how to properly adjust the WDH so you can do it every time you hook up the trailer.

The only time you don't have to worry about readjusting the WDH is if you KNOW that you have made no changes in the load that the trailer is carrying. Same amount of food in the fridge, pantry, same amount of water in the potable tank, same amount or no waste in the black water tank, same amount of propane, all gear stored in the same place. Some of those may or may not affect the weight distribution but fuel, potable water and black water all will, as will adding, removing or shifting a significant amount of gear.

Too many people get a WDH installed and think that all is good and never bother to adjust it. I don't use WDH's when I tow, for several reasons.

I tow about 6 or 7 different trailers and I'm not paying for a WDH for each trailer. All but one or two, the larger trailers do have sway bars on them. Sway bars and WDH are not synonymous.

I use a weight safe ball hitch system instead. Notice the scale in the hitch.

It allows me to know exactly what my tongue weight is and get it right on the sweet spot by physically making sure that the weight is properly distributed in/on the trailer I am pulling.

If I ever did go to a WDH it would be the Weight Safe system. It is different than the other WDH's on the market. It's also more expensive since it works differently than the other WDH systems.

Thirdly most people that tow in all probability don't heed the manual where it states: "Operating speed when towing a trailer must not exceed 62 mph (100 km/h)." When I am pulling a trailer I don't exceed 60 mph. Most trailer manufacturers will tell you to not go over 55 or 60 with their trailers.

Finally, what they don't tell you about a WDH is that as the focal point changes, think of the lever principle, the WDH will most often put more weight on the trailer axel. If it is two axel trailer that can cause premature bearing wear on the rear axel.

Are there a lot of people that use WDH's? Yes. Are a lot of them successful. Yes. Are WDH's set it and forget it? NO. To properly use one takes effort as well.

It would be nice if American Trailer manufacturers designed them like European Caravans, their word for RV Trailer,
Notice that the axel is centered in the middle, instead of 2/3rds of the way to the rear.

You know whether you are nose heavy or tail heavy when you load it. They are also much sturdier on the ground as you have to use the four corner jacks to keep it level.

Each dealer will have their own rule for installing a part you bring in. Mine had no problem with installing a genuine OEM Honda part, new in the box. What made it easier for me was that they brought in one from Bernardi Honda Parts and charged me Bernardi's price, $100 less than MSRP.

Some dealers are more about service, some are more about making every dime from you they can. Mine is all about service.

Daltongang I beg to differ. There IS A TRANSMISSION DIPSTICK! It's hard to find and easy to miss. It's in a short pipe located way down low on the transmission case just in front of the radiator on the right side of the engine compartment... by the air snorkel. It's very low and hard to find and see! Look closely with a flashlight at just a really fussy angle and you should see it. The dipstick has a wire loop black handle & easily blends in with everything in that low dark crevice. I hope this helps you and others!
Please post a photo of the transmission dipstick for you ZF 9 transmission equipped Pilot. I'm sure that I am not the only one here that would be interested to see it. Also please post the year, make and model of the vehicle you are driving with this ZF9 transmission.
