2023 - Skipping 1st gear? Not shifting smooth?

Just purchased a 2023 Pilot EXL. Traded in my 2015 Pilot with 210k miles on it. Needed a new engine, so it was time, I guess. So, obviously, I drove the 2015 all the time and was so familiar with how it drove and changed gears. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, or just need to adjust to the new one, but it's so different. Going from stop, to go, it feels as if it's jumpy and trying to skip 1st gear? Or maybe it's just changing gears quick and I'm not used to it? I'm not a car person at all, so don't know too much about transmissions, gears, etc. All I know is its different than my 2015 and I'm having a hard time getting used to the stop and go. Once it get going, it's so smooth and I love it. But it's just jumpy it seems to start off. Maybe I'm not pressing the peddle right? Maybe I'm pressing it to quickly? Not sure. I have turned off the idle setting, that turns the car off, as I don't like that right now, so that's not it. Just thought I'd come on here to see if anyone else had these issues or what others thought? Thank you in advance!

Yeah, I've switched to Econ mode and it's much better.
Same! Econ mode seems to be much better with calming the jerkiness.

I agree however Econ just feels a bit too molasses-ey on the acceleration once I get through that first starting out. So for me I just keep sticking on Normal and hope it will learn to be smoother haha

You’re right. I went to pass a vehicle, while in ECO mode, and I was like grandpa on a Sunday drive.

yeah trust me I wanted to love it because of the smooth start, but it is pokey on accelerating and then if you push down harder then it does a kickdown shift which seems unnecessarily aggressive when all I am trying to do is accelerate smoothly from 20s to 45-50mph on my suburban roads

A quick update:
My 23 Trailsport continues to shift much better in gears 1 and 2 and beyond in normal mode after 500 miles. It was jerky before that. Apparently my transmission learned my driving style and now it shifts smoothly whether I feather it or accelerate more quickly. The one thing I was disappointed about with the Pilot has apparently solved itself? Feels like a different transmission.

For the first 500 miles I feathered the throttle when starting out most of the time. A habit I picked up after driving a Toyota Sequoia for 19 years which had a quick “tip in” throttle. I had to feather it or I would spin the tires. Maybe this feathering of the Pilot helped it adjust and smooth out the gears? Hopefully this observation will help someone else.

Thanks for that update. I was feathering it too, but then switched to Econ. Maybe I'll switch back so it learns.
After 4K miles driven, my Pilot drives smooth in Normal mode. I’m thinking the car has to learn your driving habits. It was definitely jerky in the beginning.

I took home my 2023 EXL 2 weeks ago and it has significant issues shifting through gears 1-3 - very rough shifts. Did not notice on test drive. tried he different modes, but not happy with those. Wondering if anyone has tried to return their pilot based on similar issues for a new one. I know it early in the model year and honda is like not willing to go there. Just wondering. Thanks
My 2023 EXL is 2 weeks in now and the shifting from gears 1-3 is very rough. wondering if anyone has tried to return their pilot for another 2023 EXL. I know honda would not be keen on this as they will likely say they can't find anything wrong with the vehicle. Just wondering. Thank you.

I think the bar for "returning your Pilot" is a very high one. This isn't returning a jar of pasta sauce that you didn't like to Costco. If there is truly a mechanical problem then the normal course is under warranty they would fix it.
Thank you. Makes sense. I had a Mazda once that had issues years ago and the dealer eventually sorta admitted it and allowed me to return for a another/more expensive model. Not real pleasing, but turned out ok. Tough waters on this kind of stuff.

yeah I mean "return it" [to get a more expensive one] is usually just a form of buyback....like we will buy back your brand new car knowing that we are also selling you another even more expensive car, so they can make the numbers work. There are probably isolated times where Honda itself will support a swap or a "buyback" if there was some major problem that couldn't be easily addressed under warranty but I don't know what that would often be in reality

Yes that was the case. Thank you for engaging. Do you work for honda by chance, sorry.

No I don't although one might think I do right now given I have 4 Hondas in my driveway haha

My journey is over. Sold mine at a loss. Horrible vehicle, will never buy Honda again. Bought my wife a new GLE350 and shocker, shifting works like a normal car.

The whole notion of a transmission needing to “learn” is absolute horseshit. Even if this was the case a dealer could reset this in half a second. The default phase of any self learning software wouldn’t be “be aggressive and shift hard as hell”. Transmission and vehicle are garbage. Good luck y’all. Keep receipts and lemon it if you can.

I had other issues like trim pieces separating. Just check Reddit.

I believe it skips 1st and launches in 2nd to have smooth acceleration unless your towing and or in sport mode

That's great. I'm wondering if AWD might have something to do with it performing well. Just so frustrating to experience. Hope everyone experiencing issues gets a satisfactory outcome.

Nice to have the big bucks, eh? I’d like to hear his first year review of that GLE. I have access to a ‘19 A220, and I think I’d rather have a Civic.
