2023 Pilot vs Mazda CX90/70 vs. ?

My wife and I are still rocking our 2005 Pilot. We raised our family with it and it is still going strong with 197k. I am looking for a new family car and capacity is less of a factor now since 2 of our 3 kids drive. Usually we only have 2-4 total people riding anymore. I am planning on keeping the 05 for my youngest. We keep our cars a long time so reliability is very important. I love the idea of going smaller for more fuel efficiency and fun to drive characteristics but a smooth quiet ride is also important. What do you think of the new in-line 6 Mazda has coming in the cx90/70? What else is everyone considering?

Hopefully the CX90 has quieter tire noise, less sunroof sunscreen and other road noises than the Pilot.

Making and selling more units with massive volume and extensive R&D doesn’t necessarily equate to reliability or owner satisfaction even though its a genius method of producing a cheaper made product so as to fool the consumer that he is getting more value than a competitor producing a limited build unit with quality R&D focused on more luxury, a better value and a joy to drive.
This isn't mine but finally found some real world pics of a Turbo S CX-90 in the deep crystal blue I ordered. Feeling like I made the right choice...but I do love those Mazda reds. View attachment 167823

That looks a bit lighter blue than the Deep Crystal Blue on some of the other Mazda models I've seen on their lot. Your pictures look great and that's even on a cloudy day. I've looked on the Mazda lot on a bright sunny day and the Deep Crystal Blue on other models looked almost black unless I saw the sun reflecting off it. They definitely had sparkle due to the mica flakes I'm guessing but looked much too dark. I need to see a blue CX-90 in person.
Honda over a Mazda any day , any metric. Esp. re- sale. The CX 90 is a nice stylish vehicle , but I'll take the Pilot, thanks just the same.

Yes sir. You're right and I am wrong. Honda is leaps and bounds better than the Mazda and I made a big mistake getting the CX-90 instead of the Pilot.

Why do you feel you made a big mistake? Or are you missing /s here?

Interesting for those looking MDX vs. CX-90.

Interesting results. I would like to see how they handle on track, just to see the handling capability. Type s would probably still do well over others. It's expensive too though. G80 is expensive too but interior and features are level above both.

The Type S is lighter and more HP compared to the CX90, so it is not a surprise to see that win. I can relate to the transmission jerkiness at low speeds in the CX-90 and it does not bother me. Also there is a $17k delta between the two (base Turbo S and base Type S).

I will also say this. I prefer the MDX front seats. Super comfortable. The Mazda seats are good but not MDX good.

Buyers remorse is common , try not to beat yourself up over it, chalk it up to a learning experience and try not to make the same mistake again in 5 years when you get it paid off. You'll prolly re-remorse again at trade in time due to re-sale/trade in value but someday when you get back into a Honda all will be right. Happy Motoring !

Man, there multiple aspects to owning a car than resale value, everyone has different priorities. That's why choices exists and his money, his choice, same goes for you. You decided to buy pilot, good for you. He decided on CX-90, good for him.

Thanks for posting this.

This is a weird review. First he has at least one technical error (it does have lane centering). He calls out hard plastic on the lower dash with all competitors have, and he takes issue with fabric detaching on an older cheaper model and that the CX-90 might have happen? And the MDX and BMW comparisons...no even handed comparison of technical details or costs. But these have been discussed to death here and other places. Also to nitpick the vehicle not being all new due to a corporate infotainment...kind of tips his bias before he even starts.

I do agree the SH-AWD is a superior system to Mazdas. The offroad test...seems more a test of departure and entry angles than awd systems. Not a surprise ilthe CX didn't fare well and while I didn't watch his other videos I am sure the Pilot and Telluride were able to complete the course.
Reasons are interesting...didn't the CX-9 win first place for being more fun to drive when it was new-ish? And if I recall it lost points for being too small and down on power. So they made the CX-90 just a hair bigger and gave it more power and now it's in 5th. Ahh journalists. And what a surprise to see the Korean twins on top again.

Good showing by the Pilot!

With you. Disagree on the 5th place for Mazda, especially over the Subaru Ascent.

I think the problem is that mazda keeps sending journalists the trim that costs mdx money instead of a trim that is more 'mazda priced'. If they sent out the gt trim instead things might look different.
Watch the following video about the work needed to be able to replace the head gasket ln a late model Mazda CX-9 (with a Skyactiv turbo engine) and see if it would give you any concerns about buying a CX-90.

No more concern than the out of warranty costs of fixing the VCM related oil blow by issues of the Honda V6 from my 2012 Odyssey.
