2023 Pilot vs Mazda CX90/70 vs. ?

My wife and I are still rocking our 2005 Pilot. We raised our family with it and it is still going strong with 197k. I am looking for a new family car and capacity is less of a factor now since 2 of our 3 kids drive. Usually we only have 2-4 total people riding anymore. I am planning on keeping the 05 for my youngest. We keep our cars a long time so reliability is very important. I love the idea of going smaller for more fuel efficiency and fun to drive characteristics but a smooth quiet ride is also important. What do you think of the new in-line 6 Mazda has coming in the cx90/70? What else is everyone considering?

Mazda is also a smaller company with a smaller budget to devote to R&D. Likely Honda spends more hours on R&D and as a result catches more potential issues.
I agree with most of what you said, but I have one word for you regarding this statement: Stellantis:ROFLMAO:

Excellent example...company size does not equal quality.

The CX-90 has more complexity/more moving parts than the Pilot. It will have more potential issues than the Pilot as a fact. Mazda is also a smaller company with a smaller budget to devote to R&D. Likely Honda spends more hours on R&D and as a result catches more potential issues.

The nature of those issues is the question. Do they impact reliability/durability or are they ust annoyances or vehicle characteristics. For example our 2012 Odyssey has the most irritating creaks from the front suspension that started within the first 12 months. It's the material used in the front strut mount. It dries out and squeaks. To get rid of it they pull it apart and lube it about once a year. Which I stopped doing when the warranty expired. Has no impact on safety or operation.

By comparison a coworker bought a new Telluride. Within 1500 miles the vehicle would rock and shake severely. Turns out it was missing one engine bolt and another was loose. They also had to park it outside because if the risk of fire from the trailer hitch wiring.

Mazda had recalls on the 6 sedan because there were spiders making webs in the vent tube from the gas tank. I've never heard of that one before or since.

Toyota Grand Highlander will have a complex system like the CX-90, again more moving parts.

But then again compared to 40 years ago all cars are pretty reliable. Most complaints or low rankings on quality these days are related to infotainment systems and not mechanical issues.

But what you like and what works for you. If it's crap then trade it.
Honda probably builds more engines than anyone. In Asia, most motorcycle are Honda. Pretty solid company for engines but transmissions are different story. Hopefully all new in house 10 speed will keep going strong.

The regular hybrid system from Toyota is actually pretty reliable based on Prius. I wouldn't expect it to have any problems till 300k. By then pilot would be at 3rd timing belt change.
As @wi_badger and @Ruturaj mentioned, the CX-90 on paper has the potential for more issues due to the complexity of the powertrain - turbocharger, intercooler, new transmission, mild hybrid setup, etc. As a company, both Honda and Mazda on are on par in terms of reliability over the last 8 to 10 years. There is a warranty to cover anything catastrophic. I'm rolling the dice on the CX-90 for my family as I value driving dynamics more than space efficiency. For me, the CX-90 is the frugal man's BMW X7.

If you're risk averse, wait it out for the 1st two model years and then purchase. The Acura MDX has been out for two years and is due for a minor facelift. You can have the MDX as an option as well given the current 2023 MDX is available at a good discount.
All complexity and newer performances comparison are not the factor behind me not choosing CX-90, it's the space for me. It would definitely be a solid ride.

We don't drive a spec sheet, how car feels and handles matter, which I am sure CX-90 would excel at given how good FWD based CX-9 was. Asian manufacturers like to limit torque at start, that's why cars don't do as well as European cars in 0-60 test but do better on reliability test of time. In corners pushing the car with communicative steering has an enjoyment factor to it.

I would throw in GM as well, basically same underneath GM trucks and SUV Tahoe, suburban, Yukon, all sell in very large numbers and are still unreliable.

Then they upgraded to ZF9 🤣
Does new Honda Pilot 2023 and MDX uses same in house 10sp transmission? I was watching savagegeese MDX long term review and they complain about 10sp transmisson being a problem. This could be a deal breaker for some people buying MDX. Do we expect similar problem for Pilot?
That was specifically on the type s which I'm sure has a revised 10 speed

Seems like they did transmission retuning and some strengthening that caused these issues. So it's kind of same transmission but updated.
I did a test drive of CX-90. Initial impression is, its a very solid car with good driving dynamics and feels heavy. Its a windy day here and I could hear the wind noise inside the cabin but tolerable and goes away if I increase the sound. I really liked the HUD and it was very sharp (I hope Elite is in same league, finger crossed). I loved all the info displayed over there. Display is very sharp and no grainy stuff when I put the car in reverse(how is this in Elite?).

Only down side I saw was, space. Unfortunately, this is the one thing which will break the deal for us and make us keep our deposit on elite, I guess.

Curious to hear other's opinion on this car.

I think this sums it up pretty well. Both 3 row SUVs that started from a blank sheet with a different intent. Both turned out great but for a different audience. No arguing the Pilot is more practical based on interior space.

This isn't mine but finally found some real world pics of a Turbo S CX-90 in the deep crystal blue I ordered. Feeling like I made the right choice...but I do love those Mazda reds.

I love those red too but I would take it on Miata, not on CX-90. This blue is gorgeous.

Does this heavy feeling comes from steering wheel or cornering? It would grip pretty hard with those wide tires.

Yeah my brother in law has a soul red club ND Miata with the black bbs wheels. He has been asked about the paint job numerous times. People are always surprised it is factory.

I would say, it feels like I'm driving a tank. Not wobbly or soft suspension. May be this is due to tighter suspension. Regarding steering, definitely heavier than Pilot but less lighter compared to my 2014 Accord Sport.

Agreed, it feels very solid on the road...almost German... at least how I remember Mercedes feeling back in the day.
