I completed the purchase of a Honda Pilot 2020 Elite yesterday. Modern Steele/Black interior

OTD Price: $43,400
NC Tax 3%
I did not transfer tags or trade-in
Items I negotiated in:
All seasons mats for entire car
Rear bumper applique
Door edge guards

Purchased at Concord Honda.

Overall experience, good. I walked in on January 30th and said I will buy a Pilot right now for 43k OTD. They said no way. I walked out, they ran out the car and offered by 44k. I said no and started to drive off. They ran out and said this is a take it or leave it price, 43,400k OTD. I said no and left. They immediately called me and said to come back, you won't get a better deal. I went to three other dealerships and couldn't even get close. I texted the dealer back and forth throughout the day and got a couple things added on (all season mats, bumper applique, door edge guards).

I was thrown a curve ball in the finance managers room. I'm not sure if this normal, a scam, or simply how it works. But basically I signed everything with the salesman, had the agreed upon price OTD, and then the finance manager said that the dealer applied the $500 Honda cash to the car price and if I wanted to get Honda financing (3years 1.9%) that I would have to pay $500 more for the car. I was absolutely furious and packed up everything and started to walk out. The finance manager was upset at me and said this isn't a dealer thing, this is a Honda rule. I said no, and said no deal i'm leaving. He said he would talk to his manager about maybe knocking some money off the $500 add-on and I said don't bother. He left the room, was back in 2 minutes and said he's never had this happen before, but he's waived the $500 fee. Again, i'm not sure if this was something real, they were trying to get $500 more out of me, or something else. That was my only bad experience in this deal, and after he waived it I had no hard feelings toward anyone. I was upset though and I would have not signed the car deal if they didn't wave it.

Usually you have to choose either a rebate or a low finance option. If you choose the rebate, than you may lose the special finance option. If you choose the low finance special, than the rebate isn't given.

Sometimes you can get both the rebate and the special financing. It all depends on the manufacturer's supported programs and the rules they have involving any rebates or finance programs.

I can't say for sure that they tried to "pull a fast one" on you or not. When I purchased my Pilot in February of 2019 there was a special $1000.00 rebate (Presidents day special I think) and I was also able to get the 1.9% for 60 months.

Now that you have the car and are happy with the final deal (even though you may have felt they were trying to take advantage of you or were untruthful at some point) enjoy the rest of your ownership.

Okay so I finally got a deal I could live with.

Trim level: 2020 EX-L AWD
No options

MSRP: 40995 , destination charge $1095
Actual Price Paid before extras: 38400 (real number, paid in cash)
Dealer fitted extras (eg rubber mats, towing) None
Tax: 2942
Title and other fees: $306 DMV fees and $75 documentation fee
Total: 38400
Selling price: 35130 (but this doesnt add up, so it maybe a fake number?)
Discounts: Conquest (which is 750 but more likely 1500 see tip#3)

Dealer name, city, state. Bronx Honda
Additionally, please share if you traded in a car or not: No trade in.

So I've been looking for a third row car for a few months and settled on the pilot. I went to around 10 dealerships and emailed more. Most of them I went to the three days before new years. I wanted to pay 38k total but no one would give me that. Most wanted close to 39k. I kinda gave up on new years eve when no one was coming close to my number. Then on Jan 2nd, I decided to try another dealership, who had emailed me a decent price (38400). I was sure they would throw in all sorts of fees once I got there (like the other 10 dealers), so I was ready to walk out immediately. Sepcially since it was not the last day of the year anymore. To my surprise, they straight up gave me the price they promised and didn't haggle anything. Because its from the bronx, I was expecting the worst. I am also scared there is some mastermind scheme they are running. Maybe itll get repossesed in a week.. I don't know. Please pray for me. Otherwise if everythign works out, then I am pretty sure I got a good deal, as I went to a ton of dealers and none would go this low.

Tips for future buyers:
1. Doesn't seem like the last day of the year gives you as much of an advantage as they say. In my case, I think the other dealers I went to were all doing fine and thus unwilling to sell at cost. So I just had to find a dealer that was doing bad and wanted to move cars. That or I am getting ripped off somehow that is yet to be seen.
2. Internet pricing works. When I went to dealers with a price from an internet specialist, they bullshitted me less. Still they don't go much below the numbers they email. But definitely don't go to regular sales guys, unless you have something in writing for them to match.
3. I was told by most dealers that conquest is $750. But 1 dealer told me its actually $1500 ($750 for buyer and $750 for dealer). Im not sure if that is true. But if it is, it seemed like 90% of the dealers were not willing to give you their half. Again, this could be because they were doing well.
4. One thing I would do next time is to get more familiar with the car well ahead of time. Like I had no idea how to start without a key. I saw somethings under the hood that didnt make sense. Like uncovered cables on the center top. Vaseline on the hood closer. I had test driven, but really didnt know the logistics.
5. If a dealer tells you they are the best price around, they can be wrong! This happened to me from a dealer that had like 150 2020 pilots in stock. So a huge volume dealer. Their price was decent, but not the best. So that tells me that they werent hungry, ie they had plenty of business. Which I saw when I visited them. But definitely a good idea to get your starting offers from volume dealers.

I was looking at buying a used 2017 EX-L AWD w/sensing with 14,000 miles for around 31k. After posting on one of these threads, I was informed that a new one is not much more. After looking on here I was wondering how you were getting the dealer to get as low as 34-35k OTD? I don’t plan on adding any options unless it’s worth it. Unfortunately I’m in ND so the market here is terrible. Normally I would get multiple offers from different local dealers, but there aren’t any new 2019’s left. The 2020s here are only offered by two Honda dealers within 200 miles. My local dealer has 2020’s listed at $39,000 for the EX-L. I have never bought new, so my tactics are really based off of trading in for another used car. This time around, my car is totaled so I’m going in fresh with no trade in. Can someone guide me?

This seems like a good price compared to others

Does AutoNation Ohare sell clean cars now? The old OHare Honda used to install all the stupid dealer chrome crud and high profit stuff to their cars.

Anyone see a reason to try to buy a used 19 vs a 20?

I want EXL to stay with the 6spd tranny

I'm replacing my wife's 2008 Odyssey and since kids are grown, no more minivan! I opted for FWD since I drive a 2010 Pilot EXL with AWD.

2020 EXL FWD in Charlotte NC -
33,490 Base Price
699 Doc
1028.67 Tax
224 Licence Fee
35,500 - Check Price OTD

We locked the price on 1/2/2020 (so technically still in YE mode)

My wife really wanted to the Metallic Sapphire color (no white, grey, silver, or black) with grey interior. They proved impossible to come by on 2019's this late in the year, and few and far between even in the 2020's around here.

We are debating service plan or Ext warranty for now while waiting on insurance settlement money to come in.

2020 Pilot EX-L AWD. The dealer put on clear door edge guard, OEM mudguards, OEM all-weather high wall floor mats. My dealer also gives 4 oil changes and "Life Time Warranty" on drivetrain, transmission and cooling. Otherwise its standard EX-L AWD. Obsidian Blue. $34,714 plus $199 dealer crap paperwork fee. I let them have that but I should have argued it off.
Traded in 2012 Kia Sedona for $4000 (KBB said $3900) Partly why I caved on the $199
Total out the door $30,914
5yr Honda 2.99 financing
I will also mention that this dealer had to get my Pilot from another (competitor) dealership. Dealer trade to get me the Blue. They took a day longer then they should have, but that could be the fault of the other dealership.

Get this though, the only extended warranty my dealer offered was this all-inclusive warranty that would have covered bumper to bumper, tire repair, windshield repair, small scratches, and dents, and added 7 more oil changes. Coverage to 7yr/84kmiles. It would have added $170mo for 60mos to my Honda loan. That's right, $10,200 extended warranty. I looked at the finance guy and his manager like they must be crazy. The finance manager asked if it was the price keeping me from going with it and I was speechless. I said, Yeah, you think? He said, well, we can knock off the interest part of the warranty over the 5 years. $500. Again, I looked at him like he was crazy. It was hard, but I politely said no.

Aside from this ridiculous warranty, I really like this dealership and have done business with them for many years since the early 90's.

Dealer, Frank Leta Honda. O'Fallon, MO

Purchased 1/6/2020 with USAA Car Buying Service. Could have reduced by an additional $500 w/ military incentive (veteran; required financing through Honda) but decided to stick with financing part via USAA (2.75%, remainder cash). Dealer included DriverPlus+ complimentary maintenance (2 year or 24k miles) at no extra cost; services paid for and performed by selling dealer. Declined TWG contracts in F&I office without pressure.

Quotes from other dealers in the NOVA area were $2k higher or more, even for unsold (but still new) 2019. Selling dealer only had 2020. Didn’t want the 9-speed or engine stop/start (touring, elite).

In Canada the MSRP does not include delivery. The sales agreement shows MSRP at the top of the sheet minus an adjustment, representing the discount. Fees like delivery and taxes are added afterwards.

Judging by some of the posts, people are negotiating up to US$4,500 discounts off the MSRP on some Pilot models. Is that correct? Is some of that discount coming off the delivery/PDI? In Canada, online services show that the vehicle markup can be $3,500 or more, but they don't show any breakdown on delivery/PDI, implying no discount on those items.

Is Honda currently offering a factory rebate in the USA on Pilots? There is a Cdn$4,000 rebate in effect currently in Canada.

There was a 750 rebate (loyalty or conquest). I have a theory that it's actually 1500 but no one confirmed it.
In US delivery is extra. So for example, exl is 40995 msrp + delivery + doc fee + taxes. AFAIK, delivery is pure profit. But MSRP is fake, you need to look at invoice price. In my area it was around 37700. So subtitude that for msrp.

Then take out 750 rebate. Then take out 2% holdback. And now you are near dealers break even point. However, there is also unit sales bonus. And taxes they pay on cars on the lot. So there is always a way for them to make money/stop losing money.

Take out $750 rebate? Are you referring to a rebate that the dealer gets? In Canada, Honda provides the rebate to the purchaser and applied to the all-in cost. The MSRP for the EX-L Navi in Canada is marked up roughly Cdn$3,500, so that would be the max I would have expected to negotiate with the dealer. My online report doesn't show anything the dealer gets from Honda like hold-backs.
