I have a 2016 touring with 98k miles.
I've never had anything but an oil change (full synthetic) and nothing on maintenance minder has ever come up.

I've considered trading asap, as I am 2k away from ending the extended warranty (looking at lots of other options, including Palisade, Traverse, Sorento, Etc). Honda dealer is telling me that it'll save me 1k from the timing belt that's about to need to be replaced as well. They've still mentioned nothing about the transmission fluid/service/etc. I dont see specifics in my book like i have had on other vehicles.

If I do decide to keep it - is this something I really need to do? If so, what's approximate cost?

I know this particular year/trim has had issues - But since it's gone this long with no issues, is it likely that this one will not have the fate of those that have had issues at 25-45k that I keep seeing with this particular one?

I've had it at the dealership a couple times because it completely stopping on the interstate (just completely lost power, all lights on dash flashing etc), they said it had no problems after keeping it a couple days. I also had the push button start button replaces ($250). Nothing was ever suggested at the dealership either time. I do notice the trans being jerky sometimes.

TIA for your help/suggestions!

It's ok if you want a new car. I just recent bought a 2016 Pilot Touring and I really like it more than the options you are proposing. I think I wouldn't change a Honda for any Chevrolet or Kia. Maybe a Toyota or Hyundai y there is a SUV that you really like it. Maybe when I reach 100K Miles I will change the timing belt and water pump.

Just want to make sure I have this right. You bought the 2016 new and put on 98,000 miles and have never done any maintenance other than an oil change?

No differential fluid, ATF fluid, gear oil fluid? How about brake fluid?

I did have the front brakes done - I think they had to resurface the rotors - I guess they do the brake fluid then?
I got new tires as well.
Nothing else has come up as a reminder or suggestion.

If I am going to keep it long term, I want to take care of it but just dont know what to do and what the cost will be. I dont want to keep it if the cost is going to be more and my mileage (It's a 2016 but I bought it in May of 2017, leftover on the lot) is 25-30k annually. My biggest concern is "big" issues with it and not being under warranty anymore.

It's not really about wanting a new car. I just want to do what makes most sense financially - and not be dealing with something breaking down.
This pilot has everything I want and I would be "losing" at least something I love (like the lane watch camera) by getting something else, but I can do without that in exchange for reliability.

It's strange that the MM did not tell you have a the radiator flushed at 45K and 75K miles. Brake fluid should have been at 45K and 90K. At 90 K is the recommended transmission service and 105k is the recommended timing belt, water pump replacement. Were you allowing the MM to get to 15% oil life to pop up codes or were you doing maintenance early thereby passing up the codes?

I went over the MM a couple times on the oil change. It always got to 0% remaining.
Maybe I didnt realize what it was telling me?... I know other thank the brakes and push button start, the charges havent been for more than an oil change.

What kind of cost am I looking at on transmission service, timing belt, water pump replacement, radiator flush? I don't necessarily use the dealership.

This is why I hate the Maintenance Minder system. So easy to screw up the automated interval reminders and then it gives a false sense of security that no maintenance is required.
Is there a place I can find a list? I registered last month on the honda site, downloaded a PDF and see nothing clear in it at all. I had a corolla before and it had a checklist with intervals - it was so easy to know what had been done, what was upcoming etc.

Timing Belt Water Pump job can wait until 105k. Just wait on the coolant flush until that time. I'd get your 9-speed transmission and differential service done promptly. About $500. Get a quote.

Honestly, at this point you're probably better trading it in. The maintenance neglect has almost certainly shortened the life (to an unknown degree) of some of the cars systems, Transmission probably being the most worrying. No one can say for sure if or when it will go out, but 100k with no changes is not a good starting point.

When it comes to the finances, you should always be setting side money every month for a major repair, even if you are under warranty. If you never use it while you own the car then you have a nest egg for the next car either to buy down payments or pay for a higher trim, etc. Long term it is almost universally cheaper to keep a car for 8-10 years (maintaining it along the way) than to trade in every 4-5.

Ooh, I didn't read carefully. 9 speed does need less frequent service!

If you look in the manual you will see a section on the MM. It has a listing and explanation for the two letter and numerous number codes. If you don't have the manual go to the Honda Owners site and you can download the full version in PDF.

Do you still think I should trade it in? this 9 speed definitely concerns me. I was looking at a 2020 ex-l which has the 6 speed. I'm still going to be paying at least another 10k.
I do have the cash to pay for whatever- it's more of the principle of doing what makes best long term sense. (ie I'll finance a car for 0.9% because I can earn more on my return return by keeping the cash).

If you aren't sure take the vehicle to a trusted mechanic for a full evaluation.

Your only 8K over on the tranny. If you are not an aggressive driver or towing something then a good flush and fill would do a lot for the vehicle. You not due for the timing belt yet. As for coolant and brake fluid, get them done. The coolant over time doesn't loose it's ability to keep the engine cool, the anti corrosion add ins deteriorate. As for the brake fluid, it to deteriorates over time and that deterioration can allow water into the system. Both need a good flush and new fluids.

Generally speaking, it's cheaper to keep her! See the 9-speed Super Thread. The fact that you haven't had major issues so far is good. Seems like either they are perfect or it's problem after problem.

See this thread for Gen 2 maintenance schedule. Good guide and generally holds for Gen 3 except 9 speed which I think is 60k intervals?

It's 90K, 60K if you are towing or have other reasons to use the heavy duty schedule.

Strangely I’ve never gotten a coolant indicator on the MM in 5 years and 60,000 miles and I’ve never changed it. I’ve been debating on doing it now but think I’ll wait until next year when the timing belt (6 year / 90,000 I’m told) will be is replaced since it will need to be flushed then. Downfall could be that I just installed SVCM last month so now if I have an overheating problem it could be too late before I know. Luckily my trips are short on a normal day to day.
