2016 Pilot fuel injector issue

Hello everyone,
I was having an issue with my check engine light. After a few days it would turn off & go back to normal. I would call the dealer & they would tell me to bring it in but by the time I would the light would turn off. They instructed me the next time the light came on to drive it to the dealer & not to turn the vehicle off so I did. They found the issue, they had to replace all of the fuel injectors WOW! The vehicle has 40,000 miles mostly highway driving. I asked the service writer if that was normal & he informed me he has seen this on several pilots. Thank God for the Honda extended warranty I purchased or It would have cost over $1200 to fix. Has anyone else had this issue?

Me too. I think. Still need to have the code read and issue diagnosed

I'm new here. Foolish of me to not join sooner. Anyway 2016 Honda Pilot EX-L 44k miles "Emissions System Problem". I live in California so lets see if the 7 Year / 70k miles warranty will be honored. Heading to the dealer soon. The injectors may be the reason I have experienced some slight (but noticeable if your paying attention) delays and lurches in acceleration.

Also anyone use GUM-Out multi System tune-up on a Honda Pilot? I have seen Sea Foam Motor Tuneup mentioned but not Gum Out. Its interesting this is my first Honda and I was excited to have such a rock solid car (by reputation). But I definitely noticed some creeks, lurches, now this emissions system problem, sun room sticking mulfunction, strange clicks when I back up, rear hatch groans and creeks when closing.

I guess its back to the old faithful brand for all the rest of the cars ever buy. It's tough because the interior design of this car is exceptional.

Just searching on this forum for fuel injector cleaners. If anyone is interested here is link below. After I verify the safety of these cleaners I think this may be something that needs to be done periodically for the life of this car. Also, I talked to my local mechanic and he said that they never use cleaners because the consequences of carbon moving around the fuel system may not be good. Anyway need to do more research on this and gather more research / user experiences.

Replaced Fuel Injectors

Just got my ODB code P219A fixed under warranty. They said the warranty for this was 50k (I had 44k on my car). It was fixed under TSB 20-100. It's a little strange that they said the warranty was 50k because this should be 7 year / 70,000 miles (for California emissions states). So that is a little red flag. Also, was shocked the dealer wanted to charge me $185 to read a code (which was later waived under the warranty). They replaced the injectors and pipes.

If anyone wants to see exactly what was done:

Great info in this thread --- I have a 2016 Pilot Elite w/ 27k miles. Date of service was 2/2016. Obviously bumper to bumper warranty is over. I live in NY so the Fuel Injector warranty is still active for me.

I just brought my car in after checking the codes at Pep Boys.--- It was just P0304. I printed out TSB 18-025 and showed it to the service advisor.

They reached out and told me that I would need a fuel injector service and throttle body service. The total is around $350. Is the latter offering fluff? Can I just elect to go with the fuel injector service?

Thanks!

EDIT: Received call back- looks like the services are just for "cleaning." No replacement of actual parts. I was told if it fails after cleaning - they will then replace it free of charge.

Should I bite the bullet? Or should I escalate this to Honda? The big question I have for the dealer is -- if it fails after cleaning -- will they refund the service charge (probably no)? What is the warranty period that they'll honor and still allow me the free repair if it fails in the future?

I dont see why I should pay to put a bandaid on the actual problem when Honda even has a service bulletin for it.

"Honda service" would be wrong according to the TSB which extends the injector warranty 10 years or 150,000 miles in the US or 240,000 km in Canada.
After I got the response I did when I asked how long the warranty was I was surprised. The 150K mile max sounds right. I have a 2007 Toyota Tundra and at 148K miles the Air Injection Pumps failed, since it was an emission issue the standard warranty didn’t cover it. There was a TSB for that model year and was good for up to 150K miles. First dealership wouldn’t cover it even though I had a printed copy of the TSB in hand, went to a 2nd dealership and all I had to do was mention the part and they said it was covered by a TSB. Not only did they replace at no charge there was also a TSB out on the brake light switch, I guess this dealership checks any warranty issues when vehicles come into service.

Air Injection Pumps are $3k to replace

Some dealers will try to refuse warranty jobs because they pay less than non-warranty jobs. If they're busy with non-warranty jobs, they'll prioritize them over warranty jobs. However, if they dealer doesn't have much work, they'll gladly take warranty jobs over no work at all. :)

I just got a letter informing the injector warranty has been extended to 10 years 150k (whichever is less). Pretty miffed that they finally admitted fault now, as I ended up buying Honda Care since it would've cost me nearly the same as the repair out of warranty.

This website/thread saved me $1500. I have had this error go on and off on my 2016 Pilot for the past 50K miles. Sometimes it stays on for a few days, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it triggers other warning (traction control, AWD, power steering, hill assist) and sometimes it just shows "emissions problem". I have 130K on the car and had Honda run the codes when I changed the timing belt at 105K. At that time, Honda said that the warranty was only to 85K. I pleaded with corporate with no luck. I also considered doing the job myself following the YouTube links posted here. I checked back last week and learned that SB 20-100 indeed updated the warranty to 150K or 10 years. Honda is doing the repair now (as I type this) at no charge. Thanks to those who continue to post to this site as it saved me a lot of money.

Finally got a letter from Honda Automobile Division stating that the “fuel injectors replaced as a result of malfunctions P0420, P0430, P0300 through P0306, P219A, P219B” are eligible for reimbursement. Now, I’ve to go through and find the paid invoice and send it by fax/mail. I’ll update once I receive the reimbursement.

The dealership sold 3rd party extended warranties that were a scam. Had my lawyer write them a letter to either cover the costs or refund the warranty. Got a refund a week later.

Now there is a tsb out for the issue which is great because 20000km later it's doing it again.

Just got the dreaded “Emissions System Problem” light on my 2016 Elite with 66k miles. I have hondacare and dealer is covering the replacement for all 6 FIs. This is crazy for the FIs to fail, especially this early.
Between this issue, and having to get the transmission replaced under failure at 11k miles, it is absurd how bad the build quality has been for this Honda model.
While I have always bought hondacare for all my other cars (00, 03, 12 and 14 Accord, 06 Pilot), and had to have major repairs covered (transmissions, navigation units), I’m highly questioning my Honda/Acura loyalty going forward. Build quality has been declining compared to other competitors.

Thanks to all of your guys. My 2016 Pilot , 58,000 miles, had the check engine light and emission system failure light come on last night. Luckily I checked this forum, or else I would have quickly gone to my local mechanic for the (presumably cheaper than a dealer) repair. Instead, I went straight to the dealer and in just a few short hours today, they confirmed the code, upgraded software, and installed new fuel injectors. And the best part, they already knew About the warranty extension for this well documented issue, my out of pocket cost was nothing! Just to be clear, I have no special warranty, Honda covers this issue for 10 years or 150,000 miles. Big thank you to all of you on this forum, you saved me $1700 today.

Oh, I’m attaching the warranty extension and service bulletin so more of you can read about this, and in case you have to ‘educate’ your local Honda Dealer.

had the emissions light come up 4 months ago. It was P0420.

The summary at the time referenced TSB 20-100. It recommends a PGMF-I software update followed by A/F clinder test. Performed both of these tasks and the result is Pass for all cylinders. Tried running catalyst monitor, but I was unable to.

Rec:
Perform the first step of TSB 20-100 (Already done--which was the software update) Then release vehicle to owner for day to day drive. If code comes back, a set of new injectors is recommended

This was at mileage 98812

It is now 108000 and emissions light came back on now.

Time for some new injectors it looks like
