Hello all. My Honda dealership near me is recommending. We change the timing belt along with the water pump and a few other things that go with it. Totaling around $1800. I have a 2013 Honda pilot with 41,000 miles on it, and wondering if it is really necessary to do this now

It's time or mileage and you are long overdue. Every 7 years or 105,000 miles. When in doubt check your owners manual. Good reading when you are on the throne!

Hello,
Honda recommends that the timing belt be replaced at 105k miles or every 7 years, which ever comes first. As with any product made with rubber, it can degrade, loose its strength and snap. If the timing belt should break, the engine will likely be damaged resulting in a very very costly repair. That price seems to be on the very high side. I’d personally look for an independent mechanic to install a genuine Aisin Timing Belt Water Pump Kit (TKH-002, $192.79 on RockAuto). This comes with Timing Belt, Timing Belt Tensioner, Tensioner Pulley, Idler Pulley and Water Pump. I’d also purchase 2 gallons of 50/50 coolant specific for your vehicle and drain the radiator when the water pump is pulled for a refresh of the system. I’d also replace the serpentine belt (Bando 6PK2135, $11.74 on RockAuto). No labor should be charged for this since the serpentine belt must be removed to do the timing belt job.

If you do decide to go to an independent shop, I’d not accept any other timing belt kit except Aisin. The parts are from OEM suppliers. Proven reliability. Otherwise, I’d use Honda OEM from a dealership.

Another vote to go ahead and do it. Don't let the low mileage number make you feel like you are wasting money, you bought this vehicle knowing the service intervals (right?) so this decision is an easy one.

Did our '15 at 80k miles, well before the mileage but I was well into the 7th year, almost to the 8th year. I spent a month or so looking for dealer coupons, found one for under $1,000 for a dealer an hour away, had the dealer 5 minutes away match it and got the work done.

Here's the math.
Timing belt service, with water pump, tensioner pulleys & seals - $1800.00
I don’t think the seals would have to be done yet, I check for signs of oil leaking. This price is in my opinion, way too high. I’d shop around to have this necessary maintenance done. I wouldn’t feel lucky gambling my 41k mile like new engine for sure.
