I'm going on a cross country trip and want to make sure my doughnut spare tire is in good shape. It's been 10 years since I've taken it out. Do they last that long our do you get tire rot or other things to beware of. I'm going into to a tire shop this week for a tire rotation and asked them to look at the doughnut spare, I just want to be prepared since I don't want to be told I have to buy a new one if I don't need it.

I bet if you haven't looked at it in a while that it's flat.
Another suggestion, consider getting a used full sized wheel and putting a cheap, correctly sized tire on.

Buy a full size wheel from a scrap yard.

+1 on the full size spare.

Also, don't be surprised if the hoist has rusted or seized if you've never used it.

Get the AAA Plus roadside assistance package too. Its usually good for a 200 mile tow. Also make sure the jack and lug wrench is still in the car!
