I need some advice regarding HVAC issues I'm having with a 2004 Honda Pilot. Heat and A/C both work (i.e. air gets hot/cold), I'm able to switch between the various modes (face/feet/defrost/etc.) and the blower motor is fine. However, when I try to adjust the hot/cold mix things go sideways...

If the A/C is set to full cold, all good. However, just turning the temperature dial about 1/4 of the way towards hot causes the heat to go up way too much. In other words, it's difficult to set it to any mid-range warm/cool temps unless you adjust the dial super carefully (it is possible, just very, very finicky).

I ran across a built-in HVAC diagnostic check you can run with the car stereo which I did but it didn't throw any DTCs. Then I scanned the HVAC sensor readings using a similar process (can't find an online link, but you use the stereo again) and it appeared that most of the values were OK. I suspected the cabin ambient air temperature sensor would be the issue, but it reported ~17C (about 62F) which was within a degree or two of the outside air temp sensor value and seemed about right. However, I did notice that the sensor that tracks how far open the hot/cold blend door seemed wrong: if I set the AC to full cold the reading was relatively low, like 10% open. But if I turned the temp selector dial to 1/2 way the sensor reported the blender door was 100% open. It seems like it should be 50% at that setting?

I can pull out the cabin air temp sensor and check its resistance against the values in the manual without too much trouble, but given the feedback from the built-in diagnostics it seems more likely to me that the blend door sensor is the issue. Any thoughts? Am I headed down the right road or did I miss something obvious? Is it worth hooking up an OBDII scanner and looking for other sensor readings?

If it is the blend door sensor, is that built into the actuator motor itself or something separate? And am I looking at a complete dash disassembly to get to the thing to replace it?

Thanks!!

Welcome @pseudogeek ....good chance both Honda vehicles require similar steps to fix the hvac issues but you should select which vehicle for the forum to assist you with.

Thanks @Tahoefever! I checked that one out and while it’s related, his issue was with the mode, ie where the air is blowing. I think, although I’d love any expert opinions, that my issue is with the blend door; that one regulates how much cold vs hot air is in the mix. Unfortunately I couldn’t find reference values for that sensor so I’m not sure if the readings indicate a problem or not. I think I may just locate and remove the blend door actuator and see if that’s the issue.
