We had an 11 Touring 4WD. Black on gray. Had 40K miles in only 28 months. My wife is not driving as much now and plus we hate the gray interior. With 2 kids it shows way too much dirt.
Went to the dealer and was shocked at how aggressive the pricing is on the 2013 and how high the resale value is on the 2011. After haggling for a 1/2 hour got the 2013 for $37,200 including all weather mats. Got $27,900 for the 2011. I sold that back for cash and financed 100% of the new one since it's only at 0.9% APR. Amazing numbers, really. My wife really loves her Pilot. I wish it had more power as the 3.5L mill is sluggish and with only 5 speeds not fuel efficient either. But all else is hard to beat on this car. Plus we think the 2015 will be too rounded and look too much like an MDX. |

Sounds like a good deal, but by taking cash for the 2011 instead of doing a trade in, didn't you lose out on the sales tax savings from doing the trade? Seems like you would've saved almost $1,700 in sales tax (6% x 27,900) doing the trade...

When I sold my truck last year I got close to $4000 more by selling it private party compared to what the dealer offered for it in trade. That's a big difference.

Good point...I'm so used to trading in cars when I buy, that I wasn't thinking of of what he could get selling it privately. My initial reaction was that $27,900 for a vehicle with 40k miles was a prettty good value - after a quick check of cars.com, I guess it's possible he could get $30k+ for it on a private sale, but it's still a 2 yr old vehicle with 40k miles, and with new ones going for $7k more, might be a tough sell @ that price...

Not sure what Everette meant when he said he "sold that back for cash"
Also in my state you get credit if you sell your car privately w/i 90 day of buying new car and only pay sales on the difference not on the entire new car purchase price. |

2013 Touring I priced over this past weekend was able to get them down to $36,500 . Was seriously considering it but wife talked me out if it as it rides and feels just like my 2011 that has 30k miles. it would have been a waste really. 2011 touring with 40k goes for about $31,500 retail $27,200 trade-in here in the MW. Again depends on where you are at these prices may fluctuate up and down a lot. So the deal you ended up with I would consider ok at least in my area, wouldn't consider it an excellent deal. Dealers are getting incentives from Honda to move the Pilots faster now as gas prices go up is what my sales guy told me. The above price is $4,156 below what the sticker showed ! That's 10% less! That's pretty good in my opinion as that's about close to what an employee discount is.
Also taxes are incurred on the total sale regardless of whether you have a trade in or not in my state. You don't just pay taxes on the difference ! It's the price of new car + tax - trade in. Surprised to hear other states are different. Sent from AutoGuide.com Free App

I got $27,900 value from my dealer. I didn't bother with a private sale as I've never had luck doing that and its a hassle. I sold the car to them in a separate transaction and got a check for $27,900.
In PA, if I had traded the car in, my net cost for sales tax purposes would have $9,300. So yes I did pay 6% more on the new car on the trade value. I did it this way because with 0.9% APR the money is very cheap and I want to reinvest the cash in the stock market. I paid cash for the vehicle in 2010 and will never do that again as long as interest rates are this cheap. And why put cash into a depreciating asset? Also, I wanted to maximize the cost of the new car as I will put it into my wife's business and we will write a good portion of it off. I think the overall deal I got was very fair. If I stayed for another 1/2 hour there was probably another $200-300 to get but I believe in ending negotiations while everybody is still smiling. Prices are so cheap on this car now because we are less than 2 years from a new model and the Pilot is generally getting dogged in SUV comparisons. I do agree the powertrain is terrible with a sluggish 3.5 and only 5 speeds but this is my wife's car and it's enough grunt for her. I tried to get her to for a diesel X5 to get better styling, more torque, and better MPG but at a $20K price premium, she said "I'm just not that girl". That's why I love her! |

Picked up the 13 and really like the modest upgrades from the 11.
We noticed the new camera views, higher resolution screen, improved nav and audio menus and layout, love the new center stack, and love BT audio. The gauge cluster is much nicer and stands out better. Very happy with the black interior over the gray we had. Now if this car only had some more torque! |
