I have to say I am amazed at the mileage I have been able to get from my '13 2-WD EX-L. I've only got about 1200 miles on it but already I've seen one tank average 29 mpg and the current tank (300 miles in) is right around 28.8. Now most of the driving I do is on highways (50 mile commute to the office, each way) but Houston certainly is known to have its issues with traffic congestion so its not like I'm driving in ideal conditions all the time.
What I have observed is that the mileage goes WAY down at higher speeds (over 65 mph) and there is a "sweet spot" somewhere between 58~62 mph where the fuel economy seems to be maximized. So far I'm very happy with my purchase. |

I don't know how you guys get 19-20 mpg. On my new 2013 i got 16.5mpg at best. Love the car but this is plain insane. I'll wait until 2000-3000 miles to see if it will get better but if not this would be my first and last Honda. 8cyl. Tacoma got probably beter MPG

As someone else alluded to earlier, you cannot use the Pilot's computer for accurate gas mileage figures. You have to use miles driven and actual gas put in the tank. The computer consistently over reports gas mileage by at least 1 mpg.

I really don't understand all the gas mileage complaints. I have a '12 LX 4x4 with 15k miles rated at 17/24 mpg and I average 22 mpg (50/50 city/hwy) with the OEM ContiProContact all season tires, and 20 mpg with Blizzak DM-V1 snow tires. Long, flat highway trips net 24 mpg with the Contis. Those figures were calculated after each and every fill up, and as others have noted, the computer reads about 1 mpg higher. I use cruise control extensively (city driving included), travel 5 mph over any speed limit, and accelerate with traffic flow except on freeway on-ramps, where I use 3/4 throttle with D3 engaged. After owning a Toyota Tundra and getting 16/18 mpg, I'm very happy with the Pilot's gas mileage. For a 4500 lb. vehicle, the Pilot does quite well. A lot of the credit goes to the VCM, and for those complaining of a shudder, that's the VCM dropping 2-3 cylinders; a vehicle of this weight can't be expected run on 3-4 cylinders as smoothly as all 6.

2012 EX with 10K miles consistently gives 22mpg combined highway/city.
Over 25 mpg on extended highway only trips when keeping to speed limits (vacation). That VCM REALLY does a good job if it's given a chance. |

I'm with J-Rod. ASSuming that the odometer is realistic, first two tanks gave 22.7 and 24.1 MPG. Los Angeles area driving with combination city and stop-and-go on the freeways. I am gentle on the throttle and hate using the brakes though. Car had 3k miles on it when I bought it a few weeks ago so assume that break-in is complete. I did swap for synthetic oil (M-1 0W-30, like water...) 80 miles ago now, and I stayed in Holiday Inn Express properties a LOT last year... Got the pillow!

Honda state mpg estimate based on the EPA's guidelines.
The EPA requires non ethanol gasoline for the test. The winter blend fuels have cut my MPG down by almost 2 city, I guess along with the cold starts. Sent from AutoGuide.com Free App |

Just finished up my first tank. 70 percent highway 30 city and the computer stated 18.3 average. But after calculating miles driven by gallons gave me an average of 17.6. Not so good. I'm not a fast driver and usually coast up to lights, stop signs and turns. It's like some of you have different engines.
