Question low tire pressure light

i looked online and did the search but came up empty...

but ......
At what number psi does the tire pressure light come on for the 2012 touring with the 18 inch wheels?

if my memory serves me, on my 2009 the light came on at 27 lbs. but those wheels were 17 inch.

the normal psi for the 18" is 35psi as opposed to the 32psi for the 17 inch.
(cold temp as per the manual )

I have seen that light come on at or around 28 psi, some people I have seen like to set the psi at 36 or 37 in the colder months to compensate for the difference when the temp. dips far below freezing.

The light is coming on for me at 29/30 psi. Which seems awfully cautious on hondas part.
i ask because quite honestly i want to confirm that it is not a computer error or a bad sensor.

the temps in the northeast have been low but that should not set off the sensors nor should my tires lose that much psi when it is that cold.

My 2012 Honda Pilot EX 4WD (18" wheels) currently shows 19,807 miles on the odo.

I do my best to keep 38 lbs all around.

Back around 15,000 it had a low pressure alert come on. One wheel was at 33 lbs, the other three were 36-38. Made me wonder if the computer might also trigger an alert if there is too much difference among the wheels.

im just really curious what number psi turns on the system? if the tires psi is supposed to be 35 would the lights come on at 30? that seems too conservative. right now my tires are showing 29psi. cold.

This site says 20% under pressure from recommed inflation
Tire Pressure Light Info From Towson Honda Car Dealership in Maryland

35psi x 80% = 28 psi

You could validate this by letting out 1 or 2 psi and drive about to see if the warning activates

Conservative or not, TPMS lights coming on during the cold winter months are very common and catch a lot of people off guard.

The tire pressure in my Challenger increases by 20-21% when I take it to the track, cold PSI is 32. After a 20 minute session they will be up to 39psi.

If your tires are at 29psi cold and should be 35-36, that's actually a pretty big difference. Why not just inflate your tires to the proper PSI and fix the problem?

I agree with Yahooligan... Just set to 37/38 cold temp and wait to see if the warning light comes back in a few days...

Normally the light is triggered when pressure drops below 28psi

That is my experience as well. 28 seems to be the magic number on mine.

Since you know tire pressures are low, refill to recommended pressure or as another poster said 4-5psi above recs due to cold weather.

Although there is some speculations on the exact PSI that makes the light come on....remember the TPMS do have batteries that go bad. This will give you a false indication even if your tires are fully inflated to the recommended PSI.

BTW, my 2013 owners manual says the low tire pressure light comes on when the pressure is "significantly lower than the recommended pressure". There are no PSI numbers given in the manual other than what to fill the tires too.

I had the light come on yesterday on my '13 EX, and only for the two left tires. It was 17F at the moment. When I got home and started up the compressor, the gauge showed about 30psi on all four tires, so I figure 30 must be the threshold. I took all four to 36psi...

The sensor in my 2005 seems to come on at 28 or 29 PSI. It warns in cold weather when pressure drops, but it also warned me when I ran over a nail and the tire started deflating. By the way, my local gas station plugged the hole in the upper sidewall, very near the tread, though they said it wasn't a permanent fix, but it's been ok for about a month. In any case, I just ordered new Michelin Cross-Terrains from Costco, at a significantly lower price than most other tire stores.

Its not unknown for a car with borderline tire pressure to trip the sensor in cold weather. Driving heated the tires up so checking the pressure when they are cold is the only way to know the answer you are seeking
