I bought a new 2012 Pilot a month ago. Since the very first day I noted that when starting, the car is somehow "dragging" the starter for a couple of seconds.
I took it to service and they reprogrammed the computer and say it is normal and nothing to worry about, but it keeps doing so. I have had other cars before with automatic starters and have never seen them like this. Have someone out there had a similar issue? Or has an idea of what could cause it? Thanks. |

Are you holding/twisting the key for any duration when starting the vehicle? A quick twist and release is all that is needed.

No holding of the key, just a quick twist, as with all other vehicles with automatic starters.
It is supposed to cease cranking when the motor starts, but it continues cranking for a couple of seconds thus the motor "draging" the starter. This mostly happens when the vehicle has been off for 5 or 6 or more hours. |

Thank you very much for the very valuable info
. I just found the service bulletin and printed it. I have an appointment with the service dept this Monday and will give them a copy.It is unbelievable that I must give them the solution. When I took the vehicle there the first time they did not have a clue for a solution to the problem; "it is the first time we have a Pilot here with this problem", they said. Hard to believe after seeing the several posts in this forum re the starter problems. And as I said to them, come on, I could expect these kind of problems with a Ford, GM or Chrysler, but not with Honda. Let's see what happens on Monday. |

I've had some trouble with my starter/alarm as well. The weather has been very cold the last couple days. We have a viper system installed by the dealer. The car is 100% non responsive to the alarm remote when completely cold. We cannot start the vehicle remotely or disable the alarm. The car does respond to the Honda key, but this does not disable the alarm. The viper system only becomes responsive AFTER we start up the vehicle with the Honda key and the car warms up. The dealer has no idea about a solution. I dont know if its wiring. it had worked for the last 7 weeks, but now its down. They replaced the unit today and no improvement. Not sure if you're having any similar problems with your starter, since it has given you some problems.
