Default New Pilots are pieces of $hit!

I had my 2012 Honda Pilot LX 2WD for a little over 5 months. Could not stand the way it drove and felt. It was, hands down, the worst new car I have ever owned. I know it was the base model, but it felt more like the poverty model. Everything about the car felt cheaper everyday. Between the VCM issues and the basic fit and finish, I had to dump this thing. I hope Honda gets hit with a class action lawsuit for how awful the vcm shudder issues on these newer pilots are. Its unacceptable.

Back to a WRX, then, or what else has replaced your Pilot?

WOW did you not test drive the thing before you bought it? Maybe the wife wears the pants in the family, or your just an impulsive buyer, witch would leave me to believe your the wife in the family? Not to sure, but next time, you could always cough up the extra dough and get an EX-L instead of the poverty model. Or down grade to a kia so you can afford the options you want in a vehicle... that will last you 1/3 of the time before running into issues. Good luck on your next purchase.

I have to say that yes, we test drove ours and I had perused this site before purchasing 4 weeks ago, but generally speaking I am fairly disappointed also. The stereo is much weaker (barely adequate) compared to the '12 Passat SE we traded, and the VCM shudder (not shutter, come on people!) is distracting if not annoying. Also, even feather footing it at sustained 60 MPH I can't seem to get better than 22.5 MPG. Yeah, yeah, I know it's not broken in yet, but I should be able to get the sticker's 24 hwy under SOME circumstances. Over all, weakest Honda product I've ever owned, and I've had a half dozen over the years. Also, yes I'm aware the MPG figures come from the govt., but this is first car I've had that can't get there under any circumstances.

The people packaging and AWD system seem well designed for the intended uses, so it's not all bad. I just hope the reliability is there long term. My new "Moda" wheels are my lipstick on a pig...

There must be a variation in the amount of VCM shutter people are experiencing because, honestly, I can't tell the difference between what might be an engine shutter (when I look for it) or a slight imperfection in the roadway. So I don't think it's accurate to paint all Pilots with such a broad brush. I know it seems like everyone is having this problem when several members post about it, but that really isn't the case from my point of view. Then again, I don't need an audio system that sounds like I'm sitting in Carnegie Hall and drowns out approaching emergency vehicle sirens either, so maybe - honestly - I'm just not that fussy. Could the radio be better? Sure. But I'm really happy with my Pilot at 12k miles and enjoy driving it.

BTW - I just asked my wife if she has ever noticed even the slightest engine shutter during the 300-mile trips we have taken together a few times on the NY State Thruway and she confirms that she has never felt anything unusual.

Yeah... He's had very little positive to say in his posts. Hope his next vehicle causes him less grief... Good luck.

My wife has a 2012 EX-L with 14k miles (5miles when purchased). We test drove it and it drove like a reliable Honda. Lately the VCM shutter has been getting worse. Its shuttering as low as 20 mpg and Cruise control. IT seems like its always in the VCM shutter mode and getting very annoying. Thinking about trading it in!

I agreed with more some people with more sensitive ears, but we didn't have any complains about this issue on previous model. I bet that's pretty annoying for a long drive, I almost upgraded my 08 to the 2012 6months ago, credit didn't go through so we're happy to save toward a GL450 at least.
