I really don't like to just post complaints on here, but come on! As the title states, I got what I feel is some pretty crap mileage out of the pilot yesterday. Put a full tank of mobil 87 in the car before we embarked on a 325 mile roundtrip and reset the trip computer. 19.1 is what the computer calculated, so its probably 1mpg worse. I had the cc set almost the entire time, car currently has 5500 miles on it.

A number of factors could be working against you. You won't get optimal gas mileage at 72 mph. As a matter of fact, your mpg drops significantly with every 10 mph over 55 mph. Consumer Reports did a study you can read about here. Also, changes of topography, weather, traffic, etc. will greatly affect your mileage. So on a long trip like that at 72 mph, I'm not too surprised at the gas mileage you got. Just my opinion. I tend to drive above the speed limit and have noticed much better gas mileage (~23 to 24 mpg) highway driving when my cc is set to 55 mph. Keep in mind, Honda has established their mpg numbers by driving their vehicles on a perfectly flat track at optimal speed and driving conditions to squeeze out the best numbers for their marketing claims. Considering you are in Florida, topography probably was not a major factor, but any head wind and/or rain certainly would affect gas mileage.

We just returned from a 500 mile road trip. We have a '12 Touring AWD. We had to drive more slowly than normal because of traffic and weather conditions, more like 50-55 than more normal 65-70. We averaged over 23mpg (miles divided by gallons, not the obc which said about 25 mpg) with two adults, two children and the vehicle loaded fully with luggage and presents. Flat ground allowed the VCM to activate much of the time. I am pretty impressed given that the Pilot is a 5000lb vehicle. As others have said, speed will matter. Fwiw, when our car is going to be fully loaded I use 89 or even 91 and I have noticed a 1 or 1.5 mpg improvement and better pick-up.

5500 miles is too new to get best mileage. Winter fuel mixes available where you live may barely be burnable due to emissions regs. Try to find ethanol-free gas if possible to get best mileage.

Topography was most def not a factor. We were on I-75 between Tampa and Naples FL, very flat road, clear day, approx side wind of 10mph. I am pretty sure we are not getting any type of "winter" mixed gas here in FL, also the speed limit down here is 70mph, if I had gone any slower than 72mph I would have been pushed off the road. And as previously stated there was not a thing in the vehicle. And its a 2WD LX, lightest of the bunch... This is BAD mileage. I have consistently gotten BETTER than manufactures mpg claims, with every vehicle I have ever owned, on the highway.

We just did about 1500 miles from SoCal, up to the SF bay area, over to Northern AZ, and back to SoCal and averaged 22-23mpg with our 2012 Touring 4WD. Typical freeway speeds of 70-75mph, average speed was around 55mph for the whole trip once stops and city driving was factored in.

@Yahooligan: How many miles do you have on the Pilot? Also, what type of cargo/passengers did you have onboard? I am really thinking I just got a "bad" pilot. Anyone want a good deal on a 2012 LX 2WD w/ rack, crossbars, fogs, and auto-dim rvm? She's got approx. 5500 miles...

Currently have about 6500 miles on it, factory roof rails and cross bars, cargo was 2 people and luggage or one person and a bunch of household goods that were being moved to Arizona. Normal 87 octane fuel as well.

It doesn't sound to me like you did 95-100% highway driving on this trip. At some point you got off the interstate and drove to your destination, which I assume was not a gas station off the exit ramp. Anyway, I recommend establishing a pattern and paying close attention to the actual driving mix before you get too worked up. |

RinconVTR, thank you for your insight! It was very helpful. Silly me, I should perhaps track my mileage only on the highway. You sir, are a buffoon. Without disclosing my exact address, I live approx. 5 miles from the highway and our destination was approx. 3 miles from the highway. The rest was [B]all highway[B]
Anyway, how does that sound? Condescending enough for you? |
