Seems like we have several members here that are interested in photography (judging by all the pictures of their Pilots), so I figured we would set up a new sub-forum for all our photo enthusiasts!!!

Mrs. Colorider and I have found it to be a great hobby in our retirement! We use "Flickr" to host and share our photos with friends.

Excellent idea!

Would you find some time to provide a short photography guide for idiots how to take a picture of the car (time of day, light etc) ?

Anytime can be good, but late afternoon or early morning is generally better. Same goes for people when the sun is direct. Cloudy days reduce contrast. On-camera flash is generally bad.

I'm new to this site but have owned one Honda product or another since 1990. Now I need to get in gear and photograph my new Pilot!

I'm a staff photographer for a local newspaper and am glad to help with photography questions. Seems like a fair trade for all the information available to me here.

-Ron

PS. I agree, colorider, those are really nice pics!

Thank you very much Ron for your answer.
And congratulations on your Pilot!

I'd like get back into photography (amateur). The last time I took pictures was in black and white era. Thinking about getting Canon 50D and couple of Ls.
I like early morning and evening.
Do you have words of wisdom for how to make the just detailed Mocha Metallic Pilot shine even more than in real life? Any filters?
Would you be so kind and critique this?

The only filter I use regularly is a UV filter. And that's mostly just to protect the actual lens. I have used polarizing filters and star filters for special effects. A polarizing filter might produce a more saturated color. I'm waiting for better weather to photograph my own. It got its first mud bath today at the World Ag Expo in Tulare.

First off....what type of wax did you use? For a really deep shine, I'd use a good carnuba-based wax as your last step. Although the early AM and PM times of the day give you some dramatic lighting effects, the lighter color of your Pilot is harder to work with in that setting since the color tone is relatively close to the sun's. For car photos, I like flat, even lighting (usually overcast days or when you're in a large enough shaded area). Also most digital cameras these days have a color saturation feature. You can experiment with that as well as exposure bracketing. Take series of photos starting with the exposure compensation at 0 and then incrementally into the negative. As you decrease the exposure (essentially a faster shutter speed) you'll see the contrast increase. Post-processing with Photoshop can also help you take ordinary photos and turn them into something interesting. If you haven't already, check out Luwin1026's photos in the gallery....IIRC he doesn't use a SLR but he's been able to produce some really awesome publication worthy photos.

Thank you for your advice.
Looking forward to see your pictures.
Mud may be also interesting to picture...

I use “Luft Shield”. It was designed in Germany for airplanes. It is not wax based but it gives really nice shine. I think it is similar to Klasse. I will use carnauba just to check it out and see if there is any difference in shine.
Thank you for the nice write-up. I will follow your suggestions and experiment a little after the next wash and wax day.
Is there any difference in exposure compensating when taking a picture versus doing similar in Photoshop? I guess it is always better to do it with the camera for more flexibility…
Just checked Luwin’s gallery. Cool. Thank you for the tip.

If Luft Shield is similar to Klasse Glaze it should be fine. Some detailing enthusiasts like putting on coat of carnuba wax as a final step to improve color depth and shine. If already have a good product applied then I think you'll just be splitting hairs going any further.

My experience with Photoshop and with other software is that if you start with a good picture, the end result will be that much better. I think I still have some good photos from my import tuner days.....I'll try to post them later.

Photos were taken about 8 years ago using a film camera and slide film (scanned at processing). The colors are very saturated and IIRC the time of day was just before sunrise and slightly overcast.
