Default Another Gas Mileage thread.

Hello Piloteers!

I read the other thread about (way) lower than advertised MPG around city.

We bought a 2011 EX-L/RES in Sept 2011, and almost all of the miles on it so far are city/suburb miles. Lots of lights, stopping etc. I use it for my daily 10+10 miles commute to work.

I have just clocked about 3200 miles on it, and I am depending on the number shown by the Trip Computer for the MPG. On all these 3200 miles, I am getting about 15.8 mpg. Is this what I should expect at these early miles? I thought there is no break-in on these modern engines unlike old cars where it took some miles to break-in the engine to get a better mileage.

I do plan to ditch the trip computer numbers and start doing a tank to tank computation of mpg and see if there is a difference in there.

Attached is a capture of the mpg earlier tonite.

Any pointers?

I'd say that's pretty good mileage for mostly city driving.

Yeah, pretty good. I'm usually at 13 or 14 when it's just around town. I've heard, but will not claim as fact, that honda has very tight engine clearances. Result: it takes some time to loosen up and reduce friction. I've seen a slight improvement in mileage after 3k.

As you point out, lots of other opinions about mileage available in other threads.

Well actually any vehicle in any condition will get bad gas mileage in the city. I've gotten as bad as 14 mPG, but then again I drive with a heavy foot.

For a city driving 15.8 is pretty average. I used to compute miles/gallon on my own before I realized that it is displayed on the trip computer and I have to say the trip computer is quite accurate. I compared the gas consumption both ways, and I must say those engineers have done a darn good job.

However, when it comes to break-in the engine, in the owners’ manual a recommended break-in is 1000-1500 miles going no faster than 50 miles with an rpm less than 2 and another 1500-2000 miles no greater than 3 rpm, and no hauling.

Where did you get that info?

The owner's manual states the following:

"Help assure your vehicle’s future
reliability and performance by paying
extra attention to how you drive
during the first 600 miles (1,000 km).

During this period:

Avoid full-throttle starts and rapid
acceleration.

Avoid hard braking for the first
200 miles (300 km).

Do not change the oil until the
scheduled maintenance time.

Do not tow a trailer."

I am getting around 15.3 for almost all "around town" driving on my 2011 EXL.

BTW, my service manager recommended against changing to a different grade of oil saying that Honda has built and tested their engines with the recommended grade in mind and it has no drawbacks. I still sort of assume Honda pushes a 5w20 for gas mileage numbers.

Please specify 2WD or AWD when discussing gas mileage - it's worth an mpg or so either way...
For the record I get 14 - 15 mpg in suburban driving, 20 - 24 mpg on pure freeway, in my 2011 AWD Touring - 10,000 miles on the odometer.

10w20? All three of my most recent Honda's have called for 5w20.

I think Path meant 0W-20, which seems to be what Honda recommends on the newer models.
