I figure I can vent here to future potential pilot buyers. Being super light on the throttle, I can only get between 16-19 l/100kms in the city. The posted 13l/100kms is b.s.

Back to the same questions.
How many miles/Kilometers have you driven? How do you measure consumption? What do you consider "City" driving? How far per trip? Hoe much idling? What type of roads?

My car has just past 15,000 kms. My average trip is 15kms. I measure consumption using the fuel consumption gauge in the instrument panel, I reset the Trip A every fillup. Not sure about how to describe 'City' driving, stopn go, traffic lights typical suburb traffic similar to Chicago. There is a fair amount of idling because of traffic lights, probably 20% of the trip time is spent idling. Roads travelled are fairly flat. I do coast to try to get the numbers down, but once on flat road or grade, I must apply throttle to maintain speed.
The 3.5L engine does not have enough torque in the low rpm range. The message I'm trying to get across: unless your on the highway, it is impossible to get between the milage rating for the vehicle. Here in Cananda, the 2011 pilot is rated at 13.1 city, and 9.1 highway. I get 10.6 on a flat highway (traveling 65 mph average) no heavy cargo just me, my wife and my son. In the city, like I stated above at best 16. Note all figures are in liters/100kms

I think you would probably be disappointed in the claimed mileage of a Civic versus real world driving as well. Big vehicles usually far much worse in "city" driving when it comes time to visit the gas/petrol station again.

I get about 14 mpg in the city, and am lucky to break 20 on the freeway. Certainly one of the pilots "faults" considering less than stellar power numbers in return.

How are you guys only getting ~14mpg on the city? Are you flooring it constantly? I can easily do ~18.5 in the city, which includes constant stopping at lights. Just did a 390 mile one-way trip and averaged 22.8mpg which the cruise at 70mph. Do I wish the pilot got better mpg, hell yeah! Am I "disappointed?" No. I knew what I was getting into, and knew not to expect efficiency out of an SUV, of all things.

Quote:
All this being said, the Pilot is the first vehicle in the last six or eight I've owned that gets significantly worse than EPA estimates. The identically-sized SUV that my Pilot replaced and sees identical service got 2 mpg better even though its EPA rating was 1 mpg less. I'm impressed with many attributes of the Pilot (especially the reliability), but not impressed with the mileage and lack of low-end torque in the engine. All part of the tradeoffs and compromises with any vehicle. - Mark |

I just completed a 500 mile round trip, mostly highway, and got 19.0 MPG cruising at 65-70 MPH. I had a 10 MPH head wind going and then the wind reversed and I was bucking a head wind coming back....nice...and just my luck. The vehicle is extremely "sensitive"(MPG-wise) to head winds because of its aerodynamic, flying brick design.
Back in October, I took a trip and got 24.0 one direction(with the wind) and 20.0 coming back into the wind. My Pilot only has 3k miles on it so maybe the MPG will improve.

Normal for every car I've owned. Living in a hilly/mountainous area does a number to mpg. Driving east towards DC is horrible with all the hills and mountain drives.

I do mostly highway for work so a tank for me is normally 90% highway 10% city. I have been getting 20 to 20.5 for the last few months. I have been pretty happy with this. With as much driving as I do I will say that I check the oil level and tire pressure at least once a week. I need this car to last me a good long time

The Pilot will get very decent fuel economy on the open road (24.5 MPG on one recent trip). However, getting up to speed and anything less than freeway driving really uses more fuel (19 on a good day) than other similar vehicles I've owned.

overall I am happy with the pilot. 20-21 mpg when driving in the snow. 22-24 mpg no snow..
After 10,000 miles, your mileage will improve. Set tire pressure to 32 PSI. My next thing is whether to use dino, syn blend or synthetic.. HONDA OEM are synthetic blend.. why did honda choose synthetic blend as the OEM ???
