Default Aftermarket Warranty?

I'm about to close a deal on a 09 Pilot Touring. Trouble is no existing HondaCare warranty and it's over 36K, which frankly is about the only reason I can afford it. Any thoughts on a 3rd party extended warranty? Dunno if I'm more scared of a crappy scam warranty or going it naked. TIA Rev

Personally, I believe most extended warranties are poor values (especially on a relatively reliable car like the Pilot) and the only one I would consider is the HondaCare as the hassles and restrictions of third-party warranties are typically onerous. But this is general info - if you are particularly risk adverse, you might want to look into one. If you do decided to go ahead, read the contract carefully, do research on the insurer, and bargain hard.

I don't think the a strategy to stretch to get into more car, then pay extra for insurance to reduce the risk you couldn't afford a repair makes much sense. Why not get a year or two older car, and put the $4K you'd save into a rainy day fund to handle an unexpected repair? Over the life-cycle of the car, this will likely save you thousands.

I hear ya.

But essentially that IS what I did in this case.
Bought the 09 Touring at about 52% of the out the door cost of an 11/12 New in the Touring trim level.
But since it was over 36K I couldn't get the piece of mind of HondaCare, so was just wondering if anyone in a similar situation had one.

I was offered one but at a ridiculous price point.
2K for 3 yrs 36K mi

I was like uh NO.

Thanks for the reply.

To me the problem with the aftermarket warranty's is they are only as good as the company that is behind them. If the company goes bankrupt, you have no warranty.

Agree 100% obviously.

Why I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion based on experience of reputable co.

Or any ideas on obtaining a Honda backed warranty when the vehicle has lapsed in coverage and is north of 36K mi.

I made the deal last night.
So far loving the vehicle.

Need 1 sun shad hook, but thanks to this forum already found the best source for parts at Find Honda Parts and Honda Accessories by Car Model - Bernardi Honda Parts and Accessories

A whopping 35 cents for one of them bad boys - awesome.

The few third party warranty companies that stay in business do it by denying claims. If you can't get Hondacare, then stick $2K in an interest bearing account to use for warranty issues. If you never use it, then you have it plus interest rather than empty pockets after paying for the warranty and the repair because the warranty company went out of business.
