Default Plasti-dip blacked out 2012 front grill

Decided to black out my front grill with plasti-dip just to see how it would look. I just felt that there was a lot of chrome on the front; at least if I don't like it I could just peel the plasti-dip off. I removed the chrome grill pieces and the H emblem. The four chrome pieces on the top & middle rows are held on with 2 philips screws on each piece. The one-piece bottom row is held on by 4 phillips screws and 2 tabs near each end. The H emblem is held on with 2 philips screws.

Sorry for the bad "installed" pics due to my camera phone & poor outdoor lighting. I'm still on the fence with this but I might peel off just the H emblem so it'll be chrome again. I'll try to get some daylight pics tomorrow.

I was on the fence about the chrome grille before buying my Pilot but now I actually like it. Not to sure about the headlights through.
Hard to tell from those pics you posted since it's a bit dark. Daytime pics would help.

What type of paint did you use? I've been meaning to work on the same type of project for the silver painted part of my 2011 grill.

It's a spray "paint" thats called Plasti-dip. Its commonly found at Home Depot or Lowes. Its more of a thin rubber/plastic coating than a paint and it's removable but just peeling it off. Many have used this to black out rims, grills & emblems non-permanently. Overspray can be peeled or rubbed off easily too.

Looks nice but I would prefer the 'H' emblem left alone with crome. Thanks for the pictures.

Cool idea. I like the look. I too thought i might prefer the H left chrome. Nice thing about how you did this is you can peal it off if you decide to!

Decided to remove it from the emblem for a more blended look. Peeled it right off and back on the car in under two minutes. I like it much more this way that I think I'll keep it this way. Need a wash, the emblem is too clean compared to the rest of the car

Looks great! The "H" appears like it is floating...

That looks much better.

I wonder what it would look like if you just had the chrome stripes on the side of it as well. That might be the only thing I might change.

but otherwise it looks really good.

Wow, looks great! Better looking than I imagined. How tough is the Plasti-dip? How long does it stay? Will it peel off in heat?

i agree that it looks great! I was wondering the same about the durability of the Plasti-dip

the look reminds me of our old '08 Accord:

It seems pretty tough. I had to really pick at it at first to get it to start to peel when I removed it from the Honda emblem. Obviously, it really depends on how how clean the prep was and how thick/how many coats you use. I did 7 really thick coats (regular paint would have run). I used almost a whole can on the grill pieces and emblem. I wanted it thick, so that if I got a nick, the chrome might not show through. My cousin did his grill the same way and it looked great for about a year and a half until he traded in his car (a plus was that it is easily removed it and put back to stock condition.) It should hold up to heat pretty well, some people have used in on their rims and roofs. I don't think it'll just start peeling due to heat. Here's a discussion about heat: Heat + Plasti-Dip=? help - VW GTI Forum / VW Rabbit Forum / VW R32 Forum / VW Golf Forum - Golfmkv.com

Also, from the manufacuter: " It remains flexible, stretchy and will not become brittle or crack in extreme weather conditions; -30°F to 200°F"

That's a pretty cool way to change things up a little.

You might even be able to sneak into an Explorer club event. ;-)
