Default New Owner - Do I need Extended Warranty

Hi Guys,

I am the new owner of 09EXL-RES CPO Pilot. Just picked up my car yesterday and loving it so far. I have a question and looking for some help. I was offered extended warranty and I flatly rejected it. Although the dealer told me that I can still decide on warranty until Monday morning since the contract will not be sent to Honda until then. Although before turning it down I negotiated hard and got following rates:

Honda care: 7 yr 100K miles bumper to bumper from original purchase date (2.5 yrs back)
Premier Platinum coverage: 7 yr 120K miles bumper to bumper from my purchase date

Still not sure about first if I need the warranty and second which one should I go for? Is Honda care better than premier? Any thoughts or insights or experiences are highly appreciated.

Thanks....

Congrats and welcome. I read it twice and don't see prices. I don't personally ever do extended warranties. My theory: bank the cash and it will cover 1 or 2 major repairs. But, you'll get as many opinions as there are board members.

In general, you were smart to decline the extended warranty especially since the 09 is CPO. That alone is worth something.

Now, some key information is missing: 1) what is the current mileage on your 09? 2) what is the dollar cost of each extended coverage?

For which one, the 100k or 120k? I think I was offered the 100k for $1200.

To the OP: this very subject is coverage in other threads, ad naseum.

Sorry guys ...looks like I left out some key pieces of information. My CPO has 41k miles. For honda care I negotiated $630 for 100k from first purchase date and for premier it was $829 for 120k from today. Honda care has no deductible and premier is at $100/incident.

Is it worth taking any of this coverage?

In the end, it is strictly up to you. Personally, I would pass. You already have the CPO warranty which covers the drivetrain up to 100k. Then you have non-drivetrain coverage for 1 yr/12k miles. If the vehicle has had good care and maintenance to this point, you should be fine with the CPO. Just my opinion.

2012 the entire world will be destroyed anyway. I just wish I had decided on payments instead of cash. ;-)

Guys - Thanks for the feedback. Appreciate it greatly...

I have an accord since past 9 years and had absolutely no issues with it. I never purchased any extended warranties and the car did just fine so far.

The only reason I was even considering ext warranty on CPO Pilot was because of amount of electronics that's in the car...CD changer, DVD player, climate controls, 51 different types of control buttons in dash etc...
that's the only part that got me confused and put me on this winding road of thoughts.....

Don't know what premier is, if it is not Honda backed, stay away from it. If that is the price for the Honda bumper to bumper cpo extension to 100K, it is around dealer cost if I remember correctly. They call the cpo b2b extension a "wrap" warranty. Whether it is worth it is up to you. You likely won't need it under 100K, but some people feel better if they know they are covered.

Yep, stay away from non-honda or anything with a deductible. I might be tempted by that honda warranty at that price, but good point earlier about cpo powertrain warranty, about which I have no knowledge.

Does either warranty even cover that stuff?
