Default Winter Wheel Tire TPMS

Good afternoon,

On my pas Pilots I changed the winter tires onto he OEM wheels that had TPMS installed on them, and when six months came around, had the tire shop put the all seasons back on (better knows as "no" seasons).

With this pilot I would like to eliminate doing that, and buy a designated wheel set as I did with my other vehicles.

Is tpms required, or will the car, stability control, and the hud by the gauges work properly?

Everything will work properly. You'll just have to drive around with a dash light warning lit up. You may, however, fail inspection if you need the car inspected during the winter tire period.

Will stability control work properly?

To elaborate on Jedi's reply, the systems are not tied together. The government mandated TPMS due to careless drivers that ran on tires with 10psi who rolled their Explorers over and sued Ford when the tire tread separated due to excessive heat generation. If this were to occur, the VSA system would help mitigate the potential for rollover. It would make no sense to have the systems tied to each other.

If you haven't guessed, I'm a little upset with those drivers for the added cost we now have to incur due to their carelessness.

You won't be able to turn off VSA if you don't run tpms sensors. You might ask why do you want to turn off VSA? From Page 432 of the owners's manual:

In certain unusual conditions when your vehicle gets stuck in shallow mud or fresh snow, it may be easier to free it with the VSA temporarily switched off. When the VSA system
is off, the traction control system is also off . You should only attempt to free your vehicle with the VSA off ifyou are not able to free it when the VSA is on.

Hmm...

Didn't realize you couldn't turn off VSA. It does make sense though considering what the government intended to prevent. I wonder if a simple fuse pull wouldn't get around that.

spdfreak - With winter tires, you will definitely want to turn off VSA as you'll need tire spin to dig through deep snow.

hmm, did not know about this. Wondering if this is the same thing with 05-08 Pilot? I have no tpms in my winter tires and I just simply ignored the light during the winter months...

I doubt it - I can turn off the VSA on my Pilot without sensors in my summer wheels.
