Default 2012 Pilot Paint Flaw

I purchased a 2012 Bali Blue Pilot EX-L about 3 weeks ago and it only has 700 miles on the odometer. After walking to my car on a sunny day I noticed a flaw in the vehicles paint. Under bright sunlight you can see a 14 to 18 inch discoloration in the paint under the clear coat on the front hood of the car. The issue is only noticeable on very sunny days so I didn’t see it until now since the weather has been crummy here.
What are my options? Will they give me a new hood, have someone repaint it or tell me to just go away?
Thanks in advance for the help and sorry if I missed a similar issue while searching the site.

That's a manufacturing flaw. I would demand for them to swap out hoods at the dealer. Having them repaint a brand new car is a complete joke in my book. We leased a new 2007 Saturn Aura XR with metallic black paint that had a MAJOR paint defect where these oily looking spots started appearing underneath the clear coat(all over the car) after a few weeks. They seriously though we were stupid enough to accept getting the car repainted. We eventually made them swap cars. I hate it when paint problems come up on new cars, and the many paint defects known with the Pilot is somewhat sad.

Can you get another angle of the defect?

Sounds like the hood was damaged after the factory and badly repaired.

I'm feeling your pain!!!! Just picked up my 2012 Touring in Black a little over a week ago and when i was installing the premium running boards, I noticed a paint tear drop on the lower panel of the drivers door. WTF!!!!!

Took it back to the dealership and they were surprised i spotted it. WHATEVA!!!

Just dropped off at the dealership today to have it repaired and without my pilot for a few days... BASTARDS didn't even offer me a loaner car.

I've noticed the same issue on the front lower edge of both front fenders on my '12. It looks like a clearcoat drip though because it's colorless. I'm trying not to freak out too much and I'm weighing my options. Sometimes the dealers cause more harm than good if they have some goon doign the repair.

Just checked mine, and I have the same thing. QA obviously caught it because someone scratched off the 'drop' from one of the fenders. Not going to worry about it though as it's in a pretty obscure spot, and there shouldn't be any risk of rust. Sorry, not meaning to hijack the thread!

The dealer had me take the Pilot to their auto body repair shop to have the issue evaluated. The person evaluating my paint defect said the manufacture must have trapped some moisture in between the paint and the clear coat. They said the entire hood needs to be sanded down and repainted again.
They want about $650 dollars to repair it and could have it done in two days if Honda approves the fix. I am pushing to have the hood replaced instead because the factory needs to make this right and give me the car I expected from the start when I preordered it.

Wait, they expected you to pay for the repair when it was a manufacturer's defect?

No I am not paying for anything. The body shop said it was about $650 dollars worth of work that the dealership would have to cover.

A hood replacement would involve the dealership receiving an unpainted hood and having a body shop paint it. Not much different than just repainting the one you already have (and know fits properly and is not damaged from shipping). And the new hood would still not receive the factory baked on finish.

Why can’t the manufacturing plant ship a pre painted hood to my dealer? The car only has 800 miles on so it seems kind of silly that they would want to repaint it…

I've never heard of pre painting "parts." Anytime body paneling has to be replaced it comes as is and the body shop paints it to hopefully match your car.

Because there is no way to ship a prepainted hood without likely incurring some kind of paint damage during handling. It is also likely that the color will be slightly off. That is why the body shop feathers the paint into the tops of the fenders. That ensures that any color mismatch is not noticeable in that plane of view.

UPDATE!!!

Got the car back from door being repainted. Paint job came back crappy, with dirt in paint and raised line marks in one area. That's not all, The moulding is now not flush with the door and window visor is not aligned correctly.

SO PISSED OFF RIGHT NOW!!!!! ARGHHHH!!!!

With minor paint flaws, the cure is often worse than the disease.
