Default 2012: Interior Light Dimming Time

Up on the Honda website, on the 2012 Pilot, the specs say you can customize the lighting settings on the EX-L model with Navigation. Go to this link and look under "Information Display/Multi-Information Display":

2012 Honda Pilot - Specifications - Official Honda Site

When I leave the vehicle and close the door without locking it, I'm trying to figure out how to change the interior light dimming time from the default of 30 seconds to 15 seconds. I can't find this in the manual and the Honda service techs are stumped. The manual does show how to do it for the Touring model with the multi-information display but not the EX-L with NAV. Anybody know where it's hidden on the NAV system?

When I was doing my research, I recall seeing some discrepancies in the Honda specs between EX-L with Nav and Touring.

The settings for customizing light dimming time are done through the Multi-Information Display, NOT the nav unit. See pages 96 and 109 of the main owner's manual.

Sadly, I think that spec you referenced is just plain incorrect.

You can, however, program the automatic door locking and unlocking behavior on the non-Touring units, just not the lighting.

Even if I have to go the Honda dealer to have them program with their service tool I would be OK with that. The dealer believes there should be a way to reprogram it but they haven't found it yet. They don't have a lot of info on the 2012 Pilot yet.

It's a personal preference just like the trim level, paint color, seat/steering/mirror adjustment, etc. I was expecting it to be a user configurable option since it's stated that way on the Honda website. I guess I should have read the 600+ page manual before making my buying decision but the dealer wasn't willing to loan me one for a couple days of light reading.

If the MID is simply the user interface to a common control module that is shared by the EX-L and Touring, then I guess it's theoretically possible that it could be customized in the EX-L if there is some kind of service tool that lets the techs access this. Reminds me of VW owners discovering and sharing VAG-COM codes.

If you find from your dealer that there's an easy way to do this, be sure to share here. Always nice to have choices. Good luck.

Can you please explain how you can program the automatic door locking and unlocking behavior on the non-Touring units

It's in the owners manual and on page 2-3 of the technology reference guide that came with the vehicle. Or you can find the info here:

Wow, I just bought a 2012 EX-L and also noticed that there is NO CUSTOMIZING whatsoever for light timeouts etc. as is common in most mid-trim level vehicles today. I can't believe these options are not possible on a $35K+ vehicle and the manual is not only horrible, but fails to clarify this functionality between Touring and EX-L.

I agree that this simple functionality/customization should have been available to the EX models and not exclusive to the Tourings.

The manual is far from perfect. But IMO, I think it's clear which sections only applies to which trim-level. It's just a matter of getting used to how to read the manual.
