Default Tires worn out in 20k miles

The tires on my 2010 Pilot have worn out, the rear tires fail the penny test, the front are about 4/32. What could be the reason for this rapid wear. I have serviced it 3 times and they havent told me anything till now. I am thinking of replacing all 4 with the new goodyear wrangler silent armor. Should i do it at the dealership or find a tire dealer local or online. Has anyone here any experience with tirerack.com?

I don't think 20k on factory tires is out of the ordinary. My recommendation for tires is always Costco.

Unfortunately there is no costco near me. And Sams does not carry the Silent Armor I was looking at. Thinking of going the tirerack route and getting it shipped to one of their recommended installers.

Were the tires actually rotated at each service? 20K is low if they were rotated every 5-6K miles. We got 45K out of OEMs.

I have always been able to match or better tire racks total cost (shipping, installation, balancing, etc,) at local tire dealers with a little negotiation. Lately even our dealer has said they will match the lowest mounted tire price I can find just to get the business to offset lower auto sales. So call around and find the best inclusive price.

I am not too good at face to face negotiation. I would rather just get the cheapest deal available and go with it.

I think most people have good experiences with tire rack. My first choice is Costco. After that Discount Tire. After that (never gotten there yet) I'd go with Tire Rack. There are several tire-related threads on this message board. A lot of people like Michelin. Personally, maybe it's not a fair opinion, but I would never willingly buy goodyear tires. Aren't your worn-out factory tires goodyear?

Don’t buy an all-terrain type tire (like the Wrangler SilentArmor) unless you regularly drive off-pavement. They’ll be too noisy either right away or as they wear down.

Try calling Honda customer service to see if they will make some sort of an accommodation. Normally the automaker doesn’t warranty the tires, but it never hurts to ask. At the least, you can make them aware of your dissatisfaction.

Likewise, call Goodyear customer service. Most of their highway (on-road) light-truck type tires have a 60,000 mile tread life warranty. Since you only got 20,000 miles, ask if they would sell you a replacement set for one-third of list price. If they won’t help you out, tell them you’re going to buy another brand.

If you want a long-lasting set of tires, buy something made by Michelin like the Latitude Tour. They are more expensive to purchase than most other tires, but they last longer so the total ownership cost gets equalized.

If you select an installer from the Tire Rack list, click on the installer’s name and check to make sure they have a Hunter GSP9700 (road-force type) wheel balancer.
You can also identify GSP9700 equipped shops here: Hunter GSP9700 Wheel vibration Control System solves wheel vibration and tire pull problems that balancers and aligners can't fix

I randomly came across this thread. OP is complaining of his tires being nearly done at 15k.
Just went in for my 15,000 mile service.
Moral of the story, I suppose, is that 20k doesn't mean anything is "wrong" or that anything is "causing" the quick wear.

actually I came across a few threads here and on tirerack reviews about this particular tire and the Honda Pilots. Its not uncommon for the tires to wear out at under 20k. Anyway I did some research on different tires, and I think for my style of driving, its between the Michelin Latitude and the Bridgestone Dueler Alenza.

It's so strange to read threads like this. The cars aren't that different in terms of size and weight but the first Gen cars regularly when over 50k on the factory tires.

What a coincidence! I just replaced 4 tires on my '10 Pilot at 20K last week. The fronts were thin into the second layer of rubber. The rears were at 3/32.

I was surprised because this is worse than when I used to have a '01 MDX. I remembered getting 30K out of the low-end Integritys.

And I do rotate at every 5K, and alignment every 10K (I bought a life-time alignment package at Discount Tire Centers locally here in SoCal).

I didn't think about calling Goodyear but I definitely will if this 2nd set of 4 Fortera tires also wears out at 20K.

I sent an email to Goodyear, and they have asked me to take it one of their retailers. They said the tires are warranted for 6 years and if the retailer finds something wrong they would give me new tires at a pro-rata cost. I havent done it yet, because the retailer near me is closed on weekends.I will see how much of a reduction they can give me since it is only into 1/3 of its life.

Default 22k Tires severely cupped

22 K Fortera tires severly cupped...need replacing. Rotated properly 3 times, on the 4th rotation, I complained about noise.

Tires are warranted by the manufacturer. not Honda. Fortera's have a 60k warranty.

I have an appointment with Goodyear Wednesday. They said if there are no alignment issues they'll prorate credit for new tires. We'll see!

I never noticed how load the road noise really was, since the radio is usually on. The Fortera HL's have a lot of bad reviews with premature wear, cupping, road noise and vibration. If your car has these symptoms it may be these tires. With the price of Michelins LTX M/S close to $1 k installed, it may be worth the trouble to go to a Goodyear shop and complain. At my 16k tire rotaion at NTB, nothing was said to me about cupping. I thought the ride was getting louder. A lot of shops change your oil/rotate tires, without really inspecting the tires if they have a lot of tread life left.
