Default Pilot vs mdx towing

Was lookng at owners manual for 11 pilot and 11 mdx and saw the mdx is rated for 5000 lbs trailer towing. Other than the engine, why the difference?

Frame, brakes, axle, tire and wheel load ratings. Incremental differences in all of those things will allow for a higher trailer tow rating.

They share those parts.

Other reasons for the difference. Marketing?

They have different drive systems. That alone is enough to cover the differences. The MDX has permanent awd, which helps in its own.

LOL its not but its the difference between buying a 20 and 21 ft boat

I did notice in the manual that when measuring the rear suspension for tongue weight, the MDX sags less under weight, probably due to tighter suspension tuning??

Gross tow weight will include all gear, fuel and other junk thrown in with the boat and trailer. Then consider all gear and occupant weight of the Pilot or MDX and subtract all that from the gross combination weight rating of the tow vehicle and you may want a smaller boat.

Is there any chance that a MDX weighs a few hundred pounds less than a Pilot?

Anyone have the vehicle weights handy?

Two rating include how quickly the vehicle can accelerate the allowed weight.

A little power could change which side of a marginal performance specification the vehicle is on.

The MDX has 50 HP and 17 lb/ft of torque more than the Pilot.

the MDX also has a 6 speed transmission with a lower 1st gear for better torque multiplication. 3.36 1st and 2.10 2nd gear vs. 2.697 and 1.606 2nd for the Pilot.

Even with the Pilots slightly shorter final drive ratio, the MDX has shorter gearing thru out and probably is the biggest factor in the higher towing capacity
