Default EX-L w/ rear ent

I leased a 2012 EX-L w/ rear ent for 36mo w/ 15K mi /yr for $388/ month includes NJ tax. The only amount paid out of pocket was $740 for accessories (roof rails and running boards). When shopping the accessories the cheapest I found was probably around $670. So the extra $70 paid I considered that as installation fee and time saved for me. If I didn't get the accessories, it would have been 0 out of pocket for $388/ month. I'm not sure what sale price this was based on as the contract looked weird and there was a trade involved. But based on my calculations and equity for the trade, I would say I got the vehicle around $34,700 including destination, doc and registration (doc & reg ranges around $500 - 600 around here). I probably could have saved a couple of more dollars, but I think the deal was fair.

FWIW: On trading your car in, I've gone back and forth on trading vs. selling my existing car on my own. I decided against selling it on my own because when you trade it in, you only get taxed (sales tax) on the difference between the new car price and the trade-in value. If I were to sell the car on my own, the extra money I could get would be about the same as the extra sales tax on the new Pilot if I weren't doing a trade in. And when I trade it in, I don't have to worry about all the extra work associated with listing, showing, selling the old car, transferring the title, etc.

I don't know about that. I've ordered a 2012 4WD Touring at $36617 then added options for $704. The stealership was only offering $2500 for my trade-in, which as you say lowers my taxes. I decided to sell my truck on my own and got $4000 for it. Now my taxes for the Touring goes up by $162.00 since I took off the trade-in. In essence, I got $1500 more for my truck, but have to pay $162 for taxes. Hmmmm, I'll take that trade off anytime.

Using invoice is a good starting point, but that is not the price dealers pay for the car. There's the kickback that dealers get from Honda that is not calculated I. The invoice, plus a number of other incentives that consumers are not aware of.

Consumer reports and Edmunds let you look up invoice price, then request to view it at the dealer as well. You should only pay dealer prep and tax on top of that, nothing else.

In the last month I see sold deals of $37,400, $37,530, $36,151 and $36,591 posted here on Piloteers. I think I will hold tight at $36,500 and see what happens.

Can anyone confirm for me the holdback is 2% for Hondas? And is there a FloorPlan Fee or Intrest reserve paid by Honda to the dealer? I mentioned this and they said that is untouchable.

Thanks guys, this site is a great resource for us all.

Chris
Dealers will not discuss holdbacks with customers - that's sacred territory for them. But yes, they do get 2% back from Honda after the car is sold.

If you go to Truecar.com, you'll find that the dealer cost for a Pilot is about 14-15% lower than MSRP. So, subtract 15% from the cars MSRP and you'll get a good idea whether you're getting a good deal or not. Dealers get the holdbacks on top of that. So, you're closer to 17% mark up. Pretty amazing.

Then negotiated trade-in of $3900 for '99 Lexus GS300 with 127,200 miles in fair condition.

Put some money down on top of that and did 5 year financing at 1.9%

This was the best of 6 quotes (all by email) in the Bay Area. Next closest was $35,300.
Hi Urbanstomach,
Can you let me know which San Jose CA, dealership did you work with to get this price? I'm looking to purchase one as well and living in the same area.

Pricing a 4WD touring Pilot 2012 and I've been working every dealer around and the lowest price before TTL is $37,500. Playing the waiting game now. But I think this may be the best I can do. I am looking at an out the door for about 39,400. Any opinions?

That appears to be an excellent deal because the dealer cost is $37,363.

New 2012 Honda Pilot Price Quote w/ MSRP, Dealer Cost & Invoice
Yeah, I worked the price pretty long, but couldn't get anymore from them. With the 1.9% interest I pulled the trigger and am now setting up a time to get it and sign the papers.
Everyone else seems to be getting running boards and extra swag with their purchase, I'm just getting the Pilot. Still, think it's a good price.

landar,
it was too good to be true. The dealer didn't honor the price, but I found a dealership that would work with me and I got the same 2012 Pilot Touring 4WD for $39,580 and that is out the door.
$37,771.00
Taxes: $1,266.37
Tag/Title: $43.00
Doc Fee: $499.50 (aka profit)
TOTAL: $39,579.87
I pick it up tomorrow morning. Very few dealers would consider this price but I found 3 that would. Hope my family likes it!
