Don't be a hater dude because you got raked over the coals...here's my numbers (with no trade and no dealer add ons or warranty) which are comparable to others mentioned:

2011 Touring AWD White Diamond/Gray
$36,700
$2,569 (NJ Tax)
$7.50 (NJ Tire Fee)
$378 (Registration for 4 years...NJ requirement)
$398.95 (Document Fee)

$40,053.45 (All financed w/Honda at 2.9%).

Planet Honda in NJ gave this deal, but I had 3 other dealers; Hamilton Honda, Freehold Honda and Piazza Honda (Philly) who would have matched the deal, but they didn't have the color combo we were looking for.

Cheers.

Well-------------- (new) dealer holdback must be a ***** for me then. I don't get how you people are getting these things at invoice. Something does not square with that. Factory incentives to dealers must be much sweeter than it was a month or two ago.

I still paid a F of a lot less than you because you got reamed in taxes there NJ.

So (clink) Cheers back at ya.

Default Touring in Chicago 'burbs

Dark Cherry w/Black leather (replacing my '03 Havasu Blue EX-L purchased in October of 2002)

Vehicle price $36,195
Destination $780
Doc/filing Fee $179
Total (before tax) $37,154

Got $8K on the trade-in (96K miles) Probably could have done a little better, but it was due for timing belt/water pump, as well as fluids, and a set of tires, so didn't feel it was too far off. Besides, the trade reduced our sales price, thereby reducing the taxable amount by about $500.

So, the tradition continues - let's hope the new one is as good to us as the first one was.

$36,700 is above dealer cost for an AWD Touring. With 3% holdback, Dealer cost is about $36,150.

The $398.95 document fee is dealer profit, I would call your deal a $37,098.95 deal. Still a very good deal though.

Some history for those of you who are purchasing Hondacare extended warranties:

Several dealerships used to sell them directly online at a significant discount (Saccucci, Bernardi, etc). They sold quantity to make up for the lower profit. The dealerships that did not offer discounted warranties complained to Honda and Honda folded and no longer allows dealerships to sell them online (there was a lawsuit involved). They can still discount them, but they can't advertise price or sell directly over the internet. All that means is that you have to call them now or some allow you to submit a form over the internet and then deal through email. If you get a quote from one of the discounting dealers before you purchase your Pilot, your selling dealer will usually match it.

It is a Honda and there have not been significant issues that have required usage of the warranty. I usually recommend putting the money that you would use to to purchase the warranty in the bank for any repairs that may be needed. If none are needed, then you get to keep it and the interest it has earned.

This is the part that I don't get. The dealer wanted not a penny less $37,600 (OTD everything-but taxes)----- cash price. He basically told me to take a hike on anything less. The Tourings that were coming in were selling instantly if not sooner. So it really surprises me that dealerships in other parts of the country are having such a tough time moving the Pilots that they are willing to make so little on them...

There are a number of variables that go into demand: number of dealers in the area (in MA, there are a numer of dealers in a relatively small area including MA, RI, NH), number of competition's dealers in the area (choices), number of Pilots allotted to the dealer. Some of the larger dealers sell quantity so they can make less profit. Sometimes dealers need to make quota for bonuses or to keep their allottment at a certain level.

It really comes down to whatever the lowest price you can get for the demand in your area. I wouldn't feel upset about having to pay more because demand is higher in your area. Everyone in your area is paying the same in that case.

I can send out an email seeking best price from about 10 Honda different dealers within a 60 mile radius from my house. Not to mention the Toyota and Nissan dealers. That level of competiton gets a pretty low price quickly as the dealers compete via email with each other. I also use the tactic of saying that I would like a Pilot but if Toyota gives me a better deal, then they get my business.

The key really is to get dealers to compete. I made a mistake and went into a dealer I'd already bought two cars from without much of a sense of what their real cost was. The local dealer pretended like they couldn't discount and played hard ball. ("These things are selling so quickly we have to locate one for you!")

Anyway, I then got two other quotes from regional dealers at $3K less than their best quote and they immediately went under them (but only about $100 below), thus really pissing me off.

What did I do? I went to one of the other dealers. I told them "If that's the way you treat repeat customers wanting to buy their third car from you, I'm not bringing you my business this time." That whole thing was really infuriating!

I didn't go with my local dealer and drove 1 hour away for the same exact reason. They would not deal until I had prices from other dealers (it would've been my 2nd car from them, not 3rd). Same as you, I didn't feel they'd earned my business at all.

One email RFQ can cover as many dealers as you want without ever leaving the comfort of your home..........
