If you're somewhat mechanically inclined and have a basic understanding of the Law of Physics, installing the rivnuts can be achieved using the guide described on this thread. There's another DIY method used by the Ridgeline guys which is also pretty good. I combined both info on my successful installation. Using the jack actually simplified the installation as well. It may have taken me longer to install compared to the dealership, but I like to take pride on the work I do on my own cars especially if it saves money which means adding more to the mod funds .

If you're the type of person who does not like to get grease or scrapes on your hands, or knuckle bruises, or simply don't have the time, suck it up and take it to the dealership to have it installed.

Instructions are never perfect, but simply a guideline to help you start somewhere. Take it for what it's worth and apply it to your preference.

Dealer was charging me $200 for installation of my black side steps. Stumbled upon this thread and followed the instructions. I couldn't believe how easy the installation was!! The best part is that it only cost me $1.95 for the bolt and washers!! Although I feel ripped off that my cost was a dollar over than hpilottouring!! LOL
Thanx for sharing!!

I have restored tons of cars and do most of my own wrenching. That being said, my wife bought me the sidesteps as an anniversary present and instead of digging through all of my least used tools for the rivnut tool that is buried somewhere, I had the dealer set the two while i had the oil changed...as many others had reported, no charge...took me about 40 minutes to put the steps on. If the steps had not had the lights built in, it would have taken half of that time...

New to the site here…Wow. I wish I saw this post sooner. I just installed my Runner Board on a 2013 Pilot over the weekend, using a different type of rigg. It took me 2 hours to get the Rivet nut in. Great Post by the way. I wish someone would have done a video posting on your method.
By the way what’s the reason for the oil anyhow?

Using the jack is a great solution. I had put on a set of steps a few years ago on my 2010 Pilot and used another DIY method that was much more difficult to keep pressure on the riv nut while installing it. Today I put on a set of steps on my new 2013 Pilot and had them on in about 75 minutes. Probably could have done it faster had it not been 19 degrees outside. Anyway, it was a great solution and I highly recommend it!

I am thinking I could have used my floor jack instead of the Pilot jack which would have sped up the process. At least now I know I do not want to have a flat and have to use the Honda supplied jack....

Default Super RivNut Tool – Cost only $1.00

What's everyone's opinion as to which would look better in taffeta white, premium or black lighted ones?

Installed mine today. This is VERY easy! Bought our Pilot 4 days ago. The dealer had no interest in making a deal on running boards or roof rails, so I ordered them from Bernardi. Both were here in a day.

I cleaned the mounting area, installed rivnuts, mounted the premium running boards, cleaned again and only 90 minutes had passed.

If I had one tip, it would be to make a small mark on the edge of the rivnut with a sharpie. Then, watch the mark when you begin to turn the wrench. This way you can be sure that the rivnut is not turning.

Thanks for the tip!

By the way, the cost for me was $1.45....
