Posting a new thread to the Gallery forum will not cause your pictures to appear in the rotating pictures. Click on the link "gallery," in the row of links that starts off " home, forums, gallery, chat, knowledge..." and upload your pictures to the photo gallery, and then they'll start appearing in the rotating set.

Well, I felt stupid, being a software engineer and all

but having followed your advice I tried to upload through that gallery and it shows white rectangle instead of the picture. Now I feel even better. I can't even upload bloody pictures. There is no option to remove them and my space on the site is reduced by the size of those virtual pictures. Any suggestions?
