Default I survived a crash in my 2005 Honda Pilot!

I just want to post a picture of my 2005 Honda Pilot, after I survived a head-on collision with a pickup truck. We were both driving at least 35 MPH in opposite directions. According to a witness, the other driver in a pickup truck drove off the road; in order to avoid hitting a utility pole, he swerved back into the road and into my lane of traffic! I almost had no time to brake. Luckily I escaped with only minor cuts and bruises and maybe a fractured rib.

We only had our Pilot for less than 6 months, and are picking up our replacement 2005 Honda Pilot tomorrow in Sage Pearl . Needless to say, our Honda dealer gave us a pretty good deal on our 2nd Pilot.

Between you and orchidgirl, Pilots are really taking a beating recently! Thankfully they are showing how well they are made and how well they protect.

Glad you came out ok. Also glad you have witnesses.

I'm still disappointed they did not total my Pilot - as they did for orchirdgirl and ljan242. There may have been more frame (unibody) damage with theirs though.

Default Can't think 50, 60, 70 mph speeds...

The Pilot is a great vehicle when it comes to safety, but you should than God for escaping with minor cuts and bruises. I can't imagine how bad the damage will be at 50, 60, or 70 mph speeds.

Good luck to you all and may God bless...

Jesus, three major accidents tonight at HP.org! Glad you're OK. Maybe someone's trying to tell us something, like let's be really careful out there and thankful for everyone we have.

I was just thinking the same thing along with Ronbo's too.

BTW, if they were both traveling about 35 MPH, then isn't like traveling at 70 MPH. Sorry I don't do accidents, but I thought I remembered learning something like that.

Glad to see that you are also doing well ljan242!

I sure am very glad now that I bought my Pilot!!!

ljan242,

Thank God you're ok.

Were you able to recover some installed accessories in your pilot?

I'm not sure if this is what you are trying to say or not, but the kinetic energy in a head-on crash of two vehicles each traveling at 35 mph is close to that of a single vehicle hitting a stationary object at 70 mph. (The compressibility of the other vehicle vs that of the stationary object, as well as other factors, will alter this somewhat.) Head-on accidents between two moving vehicles usually have more force than any other accident type, although side impact (T-bone) accidents are usually more dangerous...

two identical vehicles hitting each other head-on (in theoretical terms) have exactly the same effect as a single vehicle hitting a non-movable non-compressible stationary object at the same speed. (Not at twice the speed, as the common misconception says)

Now of course the vehicles are never exactly the same, nor do they hit perfectly strait on, and teh stationary object is rarely immovable and non-compressible.

So the theory does not play out in the real world; BUT it is closer than the other.

the relative velocity will be 2x so it is twice the speed.....

tow head on vehicles at 35mph = 70mph relative volocity

Don't have my research books handy but IIRC two vehicles hitting head on at 35 each are worse than a 70 mph vehicle hitting a wall and stopping because the two 35 mph vehicles have momentum in opposite directions and that makes it worse. Notice that when two vehicles hit head on, they usually "bounce" backwards similar to the way those silly balls on string will bounce in opposite directions if two balls are released from opposite ends at the same time.

The cars not only stop forward motion but they usually change direction and move backwards after impact.
