Default k and n air filter

I just bought an 04 pilot............. wondering if anyone out there has put in a k and n filter in theirs and what was the result. I had a great experience with my civic, but have heard that it has better effects on smaller engines like civic....... any thoughts?

Don't do it. Not sure by what you mean by great experience, but it's a waste of money IMO.

K&N are wonderful filters for race engines that draw lots if air, where every HP matters and are torn down and rebuilt regularly.

If this describes your street car, go for it. Otherwise, a good paper filter is the way to go.

If it's for the performance CAI/SAI version then it's okay. But as for OEM stock boxy intake is not a good idea, waste of money, I heard peoples get bad gas milleage with it. So it's a piece of crab to me. I rather use the stock ones or some cheap stocklike version on ebay/amazon.

Pilot doesn't get riced like Civics. Waste of money. Don't bother posting about CAI either. Pilot already has one.

I ran one in my Accord for a couple years and did UOA's along the way, there was no telling one UOA with K&N vs one without.

For $40, I'm tempted to try one in the Pilot for towing in Summer.

I don't think a used oil analysis will tell you how much dirt is being drawn into the cylinders.

It sure does...from particulates like sodium & silicon, to higher wear metals numbers.

Edit: I'm not saying they do not let more "dirt" in, because they do. But is it enought to show wear and tear or even show up on an UOA? Not in my case. Many others having proven that there is a clear difference in their UOA's. So, it depends!

More noise
If you don't maintain it properly it can let in a lot more dirt.
If over oiled it can get oil in the intake and on some vehicles that has caused FI system issues.

Not exactly.

Dirty air filters actually filter BETTER and allow LESS particulate to pass, but are restrictive.

Over oiling (more so, not allowing the oil to "dry") can allow a fine mist of sticky oil on the MAF sensor wires and cause issues.

I'd still consider trying one for towing, the point is to allow the engine to breath easier at high RPM. Not saying I will, just that I would consider.

Dirty well oiled filters filter more, as they dry out then filter less.

I have run K&N on almost everything I raced, but only on two street cars.

Good choice* I ran a K&N in my 2005 ODY ( essentially the same vTech engine) for 5K and compared it to basically the same 5K run a year later... No noticeable difference other than the louder roar on flat out acceleration and perceived acceleration was better at 6000 ft + elevations. Ran that same K&N for a 2.5k test with the 2009 Pilot ...it didn't change mileage, just the sound and perceived acceleration. If you want a used K&N, some filter cleaner and oil let me know its available cheap...
* I will admit that mileage with a 2001 5.3L 1/2 T Suburban and a 2004 6L 3/4 T GMC pick-up was about 1 mpg better on similar trials.
