So, replaced the timing belt today. Considering there are always questions about how much, when, what is included, here goes:
2005 EXL Mileage: 148,447 Belt: $54 Water Pump: $86 Serpentine: $46 6 Sparky Plugs: $118 Coolant (le blue): $29 Labor: $504 Total Before Tax: $837 I had to do the plugs so they put them in for me. OEM of course. This was the first timing belt, your mileage will of course vary. Cheers! Stevo |

I guess you can probably save much more if you start gather the parts ahead, there's many oem honda parts website sponsor with coupons/discount you can find on most other Honda forums, as far as I found the NGK spark plugs for $71 shipped from amazon or $60 shipped from ebay.

I have yet to see about the mpg. Been a few variables and I have to be able to get a good feel for it. I must admit though, I do think there was some improvement in performance. We shall see.

I am amazed at the prices I've seen for this service. I have two Honda dealers closeby, and one quote me about $795 and the other is $398. Both use Honda parts, new water pump, with a coolant flush too.

Well, finally had mine done (yes chanced it because of $$$, and lucked out). 2006 w/ 123,500 miles. Local shop that trust: timing belt/water pump/new sparks. 920.00 total parts & labor. 429:belt&pump, 108:spark plugs. 383 labor total. Old belt was said to still be in great condition, wasvjust starting to get that very worried feeling anytime we left town wondering "will today be the day it snaps"

I work at a Honda dealer. We quote 750 for that T-belt, drive belt, waterpump, and cam&crank seals. So after spark plugs, you got a pretty fair price. But I usually do the labor for friends for 150 + parts.

I bought an 04 EX-L last week with 130k on it and the timing belt had not been replaced. My fiance runs a small motorcycle + muscle car shop, but he has been pretty covered up with work so I did check with the local Honda dealerships. The best deal I found (Metro Honda in Indian Trail, NC) was $499, but they indicated that they "never" change the idler pulleys and only replace the tensioner if it's leaking and my fiance felt strongly that those should be taken care at the same time. My fiance made some time and replaced the water pump, timing belt, tensioner, and idler pulleys yesterday. He replaced the serpentine belts as well. He bought the timing belt kit (Gates) and water pump from NAPA.

I was quoted $537.97 (tax included) for the complete timing kit(water pump, tensioner, belt and coolant). My Mechanic is an awesome guy who is honest and NEVER gouges us on repairs. Check around for a better price

You can roll the dice for awhile after the recommended interval but you are risking a $5,000 repair bill. I'm sure there are reasons for an interference design on modern motors but I can't think of any offhand. What is certain is that eventually the timing belt WILL break or slip and the results of a slipped or broken TB on this type of set up are catastrophic and realistically, you're looking at a "new to you" motor to get it back on the road.
