Question regarding which oil to use that is best for my 07 Pilot and at the same time will not void my power-train warranty.
I understand that the standard oil is a 5w-20 not sure which brand, but i'm curious if anyone is using a synthetic oil and if the dealership will recognize this as an approved oil and allow changes to occur every 10k as opposed to every 5k with regular oil? If you are all sticking to regular 5w-20 - which type of oil would you suggest? thanks! B |

You can use any oil type/brand. As long as you use the specified viscosity, you cannot void your warranty. If you are still under warranty, it is best to still follow the 7500 mile oil change interval. Going longer can void your warranty if the warranty work is oil damage related. Of course they have to prove that you didn't change the oil.
Once your out of warranty, you can do what you want. If you want to extend your oil change interval, you should take samples of your oil and send it off for analysis every 3-5k miles to a place like Blackstone Labs. They check the condition of the oil to make sure it's still holding up to your driving habits and engine (every engine is different and everyone drives them different). Of course draining your oil to take a sample is just as much of a PITA as changing the oil. Except your putting the old oil back in when your done (and probably swapping out the filter). Personally I use Mobil1 and simply follow the change-oil-light because it's an inexpensive synthetic and easy. It's still made from crude oil (not PAO or Ester like more expensive synthetics), but it is a quality refinement. You can get the 5qt jugs at walmart for $24 in pretty much any viscosity you want with any type of additives (high mileage, fuel economy, regular, extended performance, etc...). The best part is that when Autozone runs their $10 off coupons on their website, you can print it and take it to Walmart and get that jug for only $14. I'm currently running 0w20 in my 03 pilot with 103k miles. Honda says that viscosity is good in the pilot on their latest oil chart. I did notice a gain mpgs, but that could also be a from a change in my wifes driving habits due to the new town we moved to. After a little reading, I am finding Honda's 0w20 is pretty impressive though.

I use regular oil in all my cars and trucks and change it every 5000kms (3000 miles),I dont care how far oils and engines have come, oil is cheap and im old school when it comes to oil changes.

I have owned and worked on Hondas from 1978. I now own an 04 Acura Tl, 04 Pilot, 07Civic and a 2000 Accord, all cars get the same Wix filter (don’t like Honda filters made by filtech of fram) and 5w30 Castrol, dino oil changed every 3500 to 4000 mi.. All cars have over 100.000 miles but the Civic. My last Accord I sold had 216,000 mi. and used no oil , didn’t smoke and ran great. You don’t need to run synthetic unless you feel like spending extra money. If you do don’t go over the recommended change time. Also I don’t run the recommended 5w20 oil because I like the extra lube protection.
