I am trying to change the belt on my '05 Pilot. The car is making a whining noise and the powere steering goes out intermittenly, so I thought that would be a good place to start. The belt is on the passenger side of the engine. I have never done this before, but looks pretty straight forward. What is the best approach to change this belt? It looks like coming from underneath gives the best access but there are a couple panels that are in the way. Accessing from the top doesn't give very good access to the lower pulleys. Also, I can't find the tension pulley. Can anyone walk me through this?
Thank! |

Replace the tension wheel as well.
It usually is replaced when the timing belt is done. The earliest 05 are now coming due for TB changes based on age.

You can get access from underneath. Jack it up and use a jack stand. Remove the splash shield, turn the wheel to the right, it will help if you have another pair of hands from above.
Does the 05 have 1 or 2 belts? The older ones have 2 belts and you need to remove the motor mount to get to the power steering belt. |

Its pretty easy to do, and you can easily do this from above without removing any underneath panels. First, make note of the proper routing. Then just use a breaker bar with 14mm socket (I think that's the size) on the tensioner pulley bolt. Turn it counter clockwise to release the tension then slip the belt off the PS pulley. Route the new belt around the pulleys, except the PS. Then release the tension again and slip the belt around the PS pulley.

I doubt your issue is the belt, although it is probably due anyway.
1) Make sure that the screen in the reservoir is not plugged up. 2) I would replace the o-ring in the inlet tube. Takes a couple minutes and could solve the problem. Same as this: DIY Power Steering Pump O-Ring TSB - Drive Accord Honda Forums I just did mine to try to fix a lazy groan that was intermittently happening on my MDX, so far so good, groan is gone. |
