Does anyone have either the Yakima MegaWarrior or Thule MOAB that could chime in on durability, fitment, etc?
I did some searching and couldn't find any pictures on fitment, etc. They will be installed on OEM crossbars.

You can't go wrong with either. They're both quality items. I have Yakima bars with a 8 year old Thule Evolution roof box and both are of equal quality. I would recommend getting the Yakima universal mighty mounts (that mount to your oem cross bars) and install the box to that.
OR.. just get the thule one, it comes with square brackets that are usually large enough to clip onto your factory cross bars. My thule fit right onto my oem bars without an extra kit (thus lower to the roof line.. )

Appreciate the input jezzy!
I've had a Thule roof rack in the past, not sure if it was dumb luck or something but all the mounting screws for the feet rusted on me - made it very difficult to attach to the vehicle. Figured I'd ask and see what people had used more recently and on the Pilot.

Most importantly, remember that if you decide to mount a roofrack box/cage and have to use an unfamiliar garage parking, clearance might be an issue. Sometimes the garage designed clearance might be fine but some garages also have over-hanging pipes and signage. Be careful!
I have a question. Do most people step on the door wells to load and secure items on/in racks/boxes or cages or or utilize a step stool or something else? I have a bum leg and need to be somewhat careful. With the three of us room has not been an issue but the option might be needed one day. I also realize that with some of the boxes, they are side loaders. Thanks.

The fact that he didn't quote your post tells me that he wasn't attempting to answer your question, rather he was contributing to the conversation as a whole, so ease up a little.
That said, yes, there is some noise. How much and what type of noise depends on which box/crossbar combination you use and your definition of "loud". I have the Thule sport rack (square tube crossbars coated with rubber) and the SV-20 roof box. The crossbars make a slight howling noise at highway speeds, but it's nothing to get tweaked about. The addition of the box changes the sound to a deeper "howl", but again, it's not unbearable. If I open the sun shade on the moon roof, it's a little louder. I do, however, notice a slight drop in fuel economy when using the box. I apologize for that not being related to your question, however I do think it is relevant to the discussion. |

I have a Thule evolution that I've had on my 05 pilot since the beginning...
I hardly notice the noise (unless I open the sunroof), or drop in fuel efficiency (since I hardly can compare it to anything). I pretty short so I do find myself doing some monkey bar gymnastics to get stuff in (tippy toes on floor well, balance in rear tires, etc...) that said, it's been invaluable and would never get another suv without one! I originally bought it for snowboarding trips (I have fit 6 people and gear on an 8 hr trip!). now with kids, I fit strollers and all kinds kid stuff up there (have up to 4 kids in the car so don always have a trunk). I've definitely exceeded the recommended weight limits (of the box and factory cross bars) but as long I I did take a g turns all has been good. I did have one issue opening it when temps were in the -5ish range. Sent from my Autoguide iPhone app |
