I'm looking to replace the restrictive Y pipe off of the engine. Has anyone installed the Walker exhaust pipe, part #53599?

Looking at the picture of #53599 on Amazon ($125) it looks like the tubing was not mandrel bent, so the question becomes, "Will your exhaust be opened up more than from the factory?" Just looking at the picture, it looks like it was bent on the old style 'crimp' fixtures. If that's the case, you might want to save your money. Additionally, even if that part was mandrel bent, I'm just wondering how much that would change things. Even at wide open throttle and at the peak of the horsepower curve (5,500 rpm and above?), would you even see a 5 hp increase? Probably not.

I agree that pipe does not look ideal (From the photo it looks like one of the pipes comes in at 90 degrees), but at this point it is the only thing I have been able to find. However, the reason why I asked was to gauge if there was any noticeable increase.
It seems to me that pipe has the cheap “back to back D crimp”. Without dropping the pipe and looking inside it’s tough to tell how restrictive it is. I had a 1999 Ford Contour with the 2.5L and manual transmission back in the day, and the first mod that was recommended on the forums was to open up that restriction. Believe you me, you could feel the difference. It really helped with the low end torque, which is exactly where this motor needs. I’m not looking for top end horse power. I just might get a welder for fathers day and have at it. Last edited by Nickp; 06-02-2011 at 10:55 PM. |

The closer to the engine the more an exhaust system restriction will choke the engine. This is why so many oem mufflers are now mounted just behind the back bumper. The farther back the better. I think free flowing headers would be the best invesment but I don't think anyone makes them. A mandrel bent and free flowing Y Pipe should free up some power but not much since these compuer controlled engines take everything into account. It's hard to change one part and get a true increase in power over a broad rpm range. I would not install anything unless it was researched, dyno'd and proven to increase power where I will want it, down low in the rpm range.

Check in with Hondamaint for leads on exhaust manifolds. He even created an Ody with over 500hp......
