Two questions.
1) Exactly what do you call "city driving"?
2) Exactly how do you measure your MPG?

well i live in brooklyn, NY, so def no hills and city driving as in the rural areas and i measure my MPG by dividing mileage by how many gallons were used, so i basically fill up a new tank, set my trip A odometer to 0 and start driving, at my next fill up, i see how many gallons are filled, lets use 10 for example, and i see that i drove 118 miles within this fill up and the last, so i 118/10= 11 MPG RIGHT??? WTH is going on here??? PLZ HELP, the gas pump is SQUEEZING my wallet dry!!

1) You will find that tank to tank there is a good bit of variability.
To help average this out you should check at least three tanks in a row.
2) Your math shows 11.8 MPG, so you are much closer to 12 than to 11.
3) NY area driving is usually worse than "city" as defined by the EPA.

I have noticed over the years that when I fill up with a 1/2 - 3/4 full tank that my MPG is lower than if I let the tank get to 1/4.

We just had a short 120 mile round trip camping trip in ours and I filled it up when we got back. Our gas mileage was 18.x which is 3 MPG less than our everyday city driving average.

It is still 3-4 MPG better than what our Explorer would have gotten in the same situation.

AND a single tank fill up can be 1 or 2 MPG off.

I have always wondered about the estimates.

Now they are factoring in things like A/C usage and other variables.

Here in the great State of Texas I use my A/C probably 10 months out of the year. Why would the A/C not be included in the estimate?

Have you tracked 3 to 5 SEQUENTIAL tanks of gas yet?

I would guess that NYC would be a few MPG worse than the EPA c"city" rating.

So you want the EPA to do 50 sets by state?

Its an estimate for comparison..Nothing more, nothing less!

even if done by states, that still wouldn't cover everyone. especially in our state, where we have everything from the (relatively) flat central valley to the hills of san francisco to the high altitude of lake tahoe.
