Question Silverstar

I was just wondering if Silverstars, are really worth it? I changed them today and will get to see how the perform tonight when I am driving home from work. But I want to know if any one out there think that they really made a differance.

The performance compared against price and the short life span made them not worth it for me. The first thread is my comparison of the Silverstars to OEM and XtraVisions, the next thread is full of opinions, and the last thread discusses the life span of the bulb.

lifespan of Silver Stars?

There's very little that hasn't already been discussed about the Pilot, especially '03-05. The trouble, even for old-timers, is knowing how to coax the search function into pulling up just the threads or posts we need.

There's a wealth of information. Enjoy!

The Sylvania Silverstars are generally crap. They put out more lumens to compensate for the crap blue filter they have, and the expense of durability.

The OSRAM Silverstars, on the other hand, are well regarded. Hard to find in the US.

Thanks for the help. But i do have to say last night when I was driving home from work I thought the low beams were not that impressive but when I turned on the High Beams I thought wow what a differance. But then I got to see just what a change they really made. An '03-'05 Pilot drove past me with OEM lightbulbs in. I spead up to see just how the compared and wow it was really a noticable differance. At a red light I rolled down my window and asked the guy (just to make sure) if they were OEM lightbulbs and he said yes. He also asked what I was useing and I told him Silverstars and where I bought them and what I paid ($19.99 each at Checker Auto). He said he wsa going to run out and get him a pair tomorrow (Today).

Im on my 2nd pair, while I like the output they provide, it is not worth the hassle of replacing them under a year. I think I will shift to the Osrams when this set goes, I need to know I can trust my lights at night, my wifes pair didnt last long at all, I put her Ody set back to stock and wont have to worry about them again. I do have a pair of Hella FF75's tucked away in the grille so when they do go I have backup, but the life on the Silverstars is just plain crappy for what they are charging.

PowerBulbs.com seems like a good source to get the Osrams. The PowerPlus is now buy one and get one free..

with this deal you get TWO pairs of the Osrams, for about 29 bucks US, and shipping is included, no tax.. pretty hard to beat.

One of the Osram Silverstar +50s that I put in the Pilot in September 2004 just burned out last week. I got two years out of it. The other bulb is still going. I put the OEM bulb back in to replace the burned out Osram until I get around to ordering another set from Powerbulbs. They keep sending me e-mail coupons for 20-30% off regular price so I'll probably bite soon. The Phillips +30s that I put in the 4Runner 2 years ago are still going strong.

Now that you have one of each bulb installed any chance of posting a picture of what the "down the road" light looks like.

My wife jumped in to the car last night and she was impressed big time! I think thats pretty cool becuase she has in '04 Acura TL with projection HID xenons. I still really want HIDs but will not put up the cash for them when I will be getting a new car in a year or two. Hopefully the '08 model year will offer them I think the '08 MDX is going to have them. Till then these are a great alternative. If one of them goes out with in the next year or so I will replace them with the OSRAMs. As soon as I get my new SONY DSC-H5 from Circuit City tomorrow I will snap a picture and post it.

Unlike CR these guys find significant differences in bulbs and have always concluded that good aftermarket bulbs are superior to OEM bulbs. The problem is discerning the wheat from the chaff. That's why the Silvania Silverstar is generally regarded as not much of an improvement over OEM whereas the Osram Silverstar is regarded as an improvement over OEM.

So my frustration here is that none of the recommended bulbs, either here or in the UK, come in the H11 size that the '06 Pilot needs for low-beams. Unless I'm missing something.....
