Default 7000 mile oil changes / synthetic oil

I am somewhat concerned at Honda's 7000 mile oil change regime. My dealer has given me a free oil change certificate for the first 3500 mile change, over and above the Honda recommendation. I asked if they were concerned at the 7k regime and they said no; so why ask me to change at 3.5k first time? No answer!

Also considering changing to synthetic oil.

All opinions and recommendation will be appreciated...

Both topics have been WELL discussed.

I would think it would be better to do a search rather than open those two cans of worms.

Thank you N_Jay. I have finally found where to find all the other pages (bottom right). I have also read all the string ref oil. Thanks again...

Brian, I'm running synthetic, M1 and changing my oil every 10K miles. The oil change interval is based on several used oil tests. Based on my driving, (500 miles / week, mostly highway), I could easily run 12K+, but 10K is a nice round number that's easy to remember. I'm doing the same with the V, although at 10K the oil in the V shows it's approaching end of life. For a ton of oil info hit the Bobistheoilguy site. They live and breathe oil...

I just had my first Oil, Filter Lube today at 7030 miles. Tried to wait for 7500 per the discussion on "break-in" oil needing to stay in for 7500 miles but had a $5 off coupon expiring today so went ahead and had it done.

Dealer tried to do 7500 severe usage check (15K check for normal usage) for $66 but I told them I wasn't in severe usage so I just had the tires rotated and OFL for $44. Will do next OFL at 15000 and then every 5000 after that.

Only $66, Sporty? My Stealer raped me for $94 for a 7500 mile service. We thought a friend, the Sales Manager, was still working there and maybe we could get a discount. We dropped the car off and headed to his office. We turn the corner and his office was bare as a baby's bottom . No recourse, we had the pay The Man $94. FYI, the Stealer in question is Spirit Honda in El Monte.

Mobil 1, what viscosity?
What kind of filter?
Where did you have your oil tested?

What about break-in oil? Our Pilot only has about 500 miles on it. When should I do my first oil change? When should I switch over to synthetic?

Thanks.

Oilguard does my oil testing, $10/test.

I first changed the oil at 5000, switched to M1 syn and changed and tested at 10K. Immediately bumped that the oil change interval to 10K based on the used oil analysis and retested at the next oil change. Still plenty of oil life left, but 10K is a nice number to remember. I now retest every 3rd oil change, keeping an eye on wear metals, fuel/water in the oil, etc.

Oil filter - old stock Honda 305's, (the larger Honda filter). I bought a case of these when they switched to the tiny filter. I'm using them in both the V and the Pilot.

Viscosity, 0W30 in the winter until my on hand oil stash runs out and 5W30 in the summer. Yes I know Honda recommends 5W20.
