Default 255/70/16 fits!!!!!

So I recently put the falken stz04 on our 04 exl. When buying tires they didn't have the size (235/ or 245/70/16) but had the 255s. Well doin some quick math found I was gaining an inch tall and just short of an inch wide. Had the guys at discount tire check clearance and we were go! 35 mins later they had the pilot done and ready to roll over people. This size defiantly makes the pilot look manly way more manly. Pics to come in a few mins.

Are your wheels at least 7" wide?

Do you think that adding 6lbs. of unsprung weight to each wheel improves handling, acceleration and braking?

Handling was IMO is fine acceleration seems to be better. Braking seems fine. Comfort over the bfg long trails is amazing. Pilot feels to have more autority.

With a larger diameter and more weight, acceleration using the same throttle inputs will be worse.
Due to the higher unsprung weight, braking poorer with more stress on the driveline components.
You should also expect mpg to worsen as you will be using more throttle to accelerate. The ride will thanks to the greater overall diameter improve, however lifespan of the shocks will be reduced due to the increase in unsprung weight.
You'll have to experiment with tire pressures.

You need to be alert to any contact between the tire and wheelarch when loaded, when turning the steering etc.

Wow really seems to be getting the same mileage so far on gas. Rpms through shifting is the same. When you test fit a tire you check most of that then you can modify as needed. Y'all make it sound way more scary then what it is.

I like them. There was another guy on here that had them on with no clearance issues at all. I think he did complain that his MPG went down some.

Keep in mind that your speedo is no longer accurate because your wheel is over an inch larger in diameter so your speedo will read ~4.0% low.

Tire Size Comparison

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
235/70-16 6.5in 14.5in 29.0in 91.0in 697 0.0%
255/70-16 7.0in 15.0in 30.1in 94.4in 671 3.8%

I wonder if you have considered the side clearance necessary for tire chains. I upgraded mine from 235 to 245 and found out that I can no longer use my original tire chains because it will rub against the shocks (?? or the metal next to it). Now I have to buy the cable type of tire chains before winter comes.

I still want to know if he will have problems if he needs to install tire chains maybe not for Tennessee but for when he goes snowboarding/skiing somewhere.

This also means that you can add an extra 4% when you calculate your mpgs.....because you really went 4% further than your trip/odometer is indicating.

This begs the question, is there an easy way to correct for different tire diameters?

do you still get a full turning radius out of them? is there any rubbing inside the fenders?

I, too, have seen a 1st gen pilot on 255's. I could see that the tire was significantly larger from a distance, so when I got next to him/her at a stop, I looked for the size.

Personally, I like the look of the 255/70 on the pilot, but the two sets of tires I've purchased have been 245/70. To each his own...

Nice pics browning4X4

Did they put enough weights on that left rear wheel?
