Default Tire Decision. Help.

Hello forum, can you help me with these two tire choices? What would you do?

1st - General Grabber HTS. Making a lot of headlines in the SUV/Truck realms. People say that it rides great, and is very quiet. Good tire for the money, rivaling more expensive brands.

I was all set to purchase these when I found

2nd - Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S
They are right under the GG HTS in survey numbers, per Tirerack. Plus they are 7 dollars less each tire, and if I get these, I get $40 back with a mail in rebate. However, road noise is not as good as the Generals.

So, this is my conundrum. Should I go with the Generals, the ones that everybody is hailing as the best cost effective tire, or go for the Yokos, that are less per tire, AND give me a $40 MIR.

Help! I have until the end of the month to decide. Thanks.

FWIW, I know someone with Yokos on their Pilot. They aren't happy.

For what its worth I found this review on Tr.
"I do a lot of highway driving (about 50,000 per year) and I get very good tire mileage I usually get over 100,000 on a set of tires (also General Tires}. These tires were poor in the wear department and I got vibrations over 60 MPH. I was back to the dealer 3 times to have the alignment and tire balance checked, they kept telling me that everything was OK or that they made small adjustments. I would not buy these tires again."

And I was actually thinking of buying these as well, considering their $412 a set price.

Samc, is the above referencing the Yokos or the GG?

FWIW- our Pilots are already somewhat noisy straight from the factory and I would stay away from ANY tire that could make that problem worse via AT tread.

I just pulled off a set of General Grabber UHPs that I could only stand for 2 years and 31k miles. Long story short, they were incredibly noisey from day one and, coupled with slight alignment issues on my '04 Pilot, the tires wore poorly... not the tire's fault though.

I have this thread going regarding alignment issues and some brief discussion about tires... General Grabber UHP and my new General Grabber HTS... 2 completely different tires.

Alignment woes, 2004 Pilot, shouldn't be this way..

I was also heavily leaning toward the Yoko Geolandar HT-S (not the AT-S), but it didn't rate highly in the consumer reports list of tires and I just didn't like the tread when I saw it in person.

That quote I found was referring to the GG Hts. Now that is the only negative review I found so far so it's just one mans opinion. I have no experience with yokohamas.

So unless I find another set with better reviews, I'll probably stick to those generalgrabber hts as well. I mean you really can't beat the price and ratings.

And I agree rubberbands would be an improvement over my stock GY integritys.

Easy GG HTS, I went throught he same mennusha trying to figure which tire to buy next, consumer reports mag, recommended them, and the reports @ tirerack.com were all very favorable as well, 20K later mine are still GREAT, smooth & quiet as the michilins (cross terrian)they replaced great traction in every situation I've been in and they look really sharp with the detailed sidewalls, I can easlily recommend the general Grabber HTS for your pilot!
the OEM tire I mine were Bridgstones, they were fair @ best, low rolling resitance traction was not always so good unless it was dry, I did put 1000 miles on a set of Goodyear tripletread something or another, my goodness those were some tires, super QUIET, super smooth, great traction, SUCKED THE FUEL RIGHT OUT OF THE TANK, easily lost 3 mpg or more on the highway, I just couldn't bear that the thought of spending more on fuel for those tires, so I put on the cross terrians, @ 110,000 it was time for set # 3 and the grabbers have not disappointed me at all , yes I have 130,000 on my '03 pilot. good luck Dan T

Depending on what color you Pilot is, and whether or not you choose OWL, you may wind up looking like this....

Still only about 200 miles on the new shoes, but they are nice..

Remember to shop online and consider having Walmart mount/balance & dispose of the old ones for about $55.

We have discount tire stores down here in the Houston area and they matched the internet price I found for tires and came down about $15 to get more in line with Walmart's install fees.

Initially, Discount tire wanted $602 out the door, I wound up paying $525... best price I could find to get tires to my door via internet was $465 and I paid $60 for installation and disposal of old.

I hope your experience with your new Generals is a pleasant as mine

Nice pics jestmaty. I prefer black sidewall, because every now and then I like to shine the tires up, and the white lettering takes away from the shimmer.
