Does Honda provide specific specs for the Pilot tires with regards to varying tire tread depth? I recently had some damage to a tire that I need to replace. Would like to know if I can just replace that one tire or if I need to replace a pair or even all four. I haven't been able to find the specifics (in terms of tread depth) in the manual.

No spec I have ever seen.
How worn are the tires?

Tread depth on the good tires ranges from 8/32 to 9/32. Mich LTX.
I know many suggest replacing in pairs and it makes sense if the new tire would put the vehicle out of spec. There must be specs somewhere because tires don't wear evenly and the drive train is likely engineered to account for this. From what I have read it seems that the suggestion for putting the new pair of tires on the rear is geared towards driving in wet conditions. Also, according to the following article, once you install a new pair of tires you are no longer able to rotate tires untill all four are replaced. The issue with not rotating tires is most about not ending up with good tires up front and bad in the back, as this can cause sudden under-steer or a spin out when braking.
That is one of the reasons I asked how worn the original tires are. If the other two are not bad, I would just start with the new on the rear and as you rotate leave the better tires on the front (higher wear) a little longer each rotation. (i.e. 2 oil changes up front, and 1 in the back) to try to get the set to die at the same time. If they are very worn, get a new set and make the best one a full size spare. CRV's had a 3% number for size difference front to back, but they have a different 4wd system, and as you get closer to that 3% number you were increasing wear in the system.

Looking at the specs the LTX starts at 13/32. Legal min is 2/32 making the half way thread life roughly 7/32. The tires are at 8/32+ now with about 22K miles on them.
I hate to throw out 3 good tires. Maybe I'll try to find someone that can shave a new tire down to 8/32. Last edited by zappy; 07-23-2010 at 02:58 PM. |

My mother in law had to replace one of the tires on her AWD CR-V due to a puncture. It was a Sunday morning and she wanted a replacement right away; since the tire size wasn't stocked at Costco and all other shops were closed, her only option was to buy from Sears.
Due to minimal tire rotations, one pair of the four tires was worn significantly more than the other. If she replaced only one pair, the size difference from the other pair would have been close to 6/32. I'm not sure if this is a standard/common rule at most tire shops, but the tech at Sears told us that most 4WD/AWD shouldn't have a tread depth difference of more than 4/32. So she ended up buying a set of four. I'm not sure where you're located, but I haven't found a tire shop in my area that advertises that they provide a tire shaving service. I think TireRack shaves tires, so if you can't find any local place to do it, you can probably go with them.

If you trust Tirerack, they recommend 6/32 for winter traction.
