Default Will P245/70/R17 fit on a stock 2011 Pilot ?

I just picked up a pilot 4x4 and the tires just suck. This thing needs better tires for the beach sand and yuck. I can't get any offroad meats for this thing in any size closer than this. I figure it won't rub as we're talking about maybe an inch.

What's the consensus?

You will be surprised at how good the stock tires and stock vehicle perform in sand. All tires on sand should be deflated to increase the size of the contact patch.

The tires you linked ( although the won't fit) are very aggressive, load range E off-road "rock" climbing tires not a soft sidewall "sand" tire. As such your on pavement ride and stopping distance on wet and dry pavement performance would be terrible. The Pilot is not a "4 wheeler" in the traditional sense of off-road vehicles like jeeps, 4 runners, older style blazers etc., with high/low transfer cases and HD differentials.

Sorry, I was in a hurry earlier. I linked the wrong ones.

Here are four very good on/off-road tires in the stock size (P245/65/17):

Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo

Michelin LTX A/T 2

Yokohama Geolander AT/S

Firestone Destination A/T

I haven't ever driven on the Firestones, but they get good reviews. I have personally used the Michelin, Yoko and Bridgestone and they are all very capable tires off-road tires with good highway performance (all used on a Toyota Tundra). Compared to the BFGoodrich you described in your post, they are probably about 90% as capable off-road, but much nicer to drive on the highway.

Be careful about going up a size and using something like the All-terrain T/A KO. This is a heavy-duty off-road tire, meant for jeeps and hummers, not Pilots. Also, the stock tires weigh 32 lbs (goodyear) and 34 lbs (michelin), while the BFGoodrich tire you want weighs 48 lbs! You will see your gas mileage tank, the ride will get worse, and your handling will decrease (your speedo will also be off).

The Pilot has a great AWD system, but is certainly limited in many other respects in terms of off-road capability. The tires I recommended will easily perform in just about anything that the Pilot itself is capable of handling. At the same time, they will be the best compromise for upgrading your "off road' capability while still keeping most of the great road manners that the Pilot is known for.

Same comment as earlier about this tire although either would have looked great on my 3/4T HD Chevy 4wd CC.

Stick with stock 17" size tires...although there isn't a large selection when you select the Pilot as the vehicle....try using the '09 Ridgeline as the vehicle with the stock 17' wheel size and selection improves for truck style tires and more agressive tread patterns.
